This year I am in charge of the Pennsylvania State Crow Shoot, and I am trying to recruit some new teams. This shoot has been going on for over 20 years, and is held at Bay City Gun Club in Waterford, PA (Erie, Co.) I am not sure how the PA State Crow Shoot got started in NW PA, but I am carrying on the tradition.
Here are some of the details of the shoot: Date: July 11, 2010 Registration: Pre-registration until July 10th OR register at Bay City Gun Club between 4 and 5 am on July 11th. Cost: $35.00 per team OR $17.50 per single shooter Class Categories: Novice, Intermediate, Super Expert, Junior/Senior and Single (new teams will be classified as Novice) Rules: - Check-in time is no later than 12:00 pm (Noon). NO EXCEPTIONS!! - Ties will be resolved by the teams’ check-in time. – 2010-2011 PA hunting license is required to shoot legally. – Vehicles used in the shoot may contain a MAXIMUM of three people two shooters and one driver. (single shooter vehicles may contain only two people) – ALL birds must be killed the day of the shoot or participants will be disqualified!!! – All Pennsylvania Game Commission laws apply. – Keep it clean!! Anyone caught cheating will be excluded from this tournament permanently. This tournament has been held for a number of years. Participants compete under the “honor system”. Unethical behavior hurts everyone. The Henderson Junior Chamber of Commerce..back in the late 60's...and I think 1970-71 held a crow shooting and crow calling contest. The intent was to raise money for the Chamber. Competition consisted of "singles"and "doubles".. meaning the morning round ( 2 1/2 hours of hunting ) consisted of one shooter and one official attending each stand ( it was run & gun only ). Afternoon competition consisted of 2 shooters, 2 1/2 hours..and one official ( a JCC member ). Crows had to be retreived and returned to headquarters for offical counting. A crow calling contest was held later in the evening.. with 4 game wardens.. 3 state and 1 Fed . doing the judging. They all sat with their backs to the callers so they did not know the identities involved. It lasted 4 or5 years and was discontinued mainly due to the "anti's" complaining. I was sad to see it pass. I met some folks there that are still good friends today.

Took that 6 1/4 lb. brown on the White River in Arkansas. My partner and I took 87 rainbows and 8 browns in 1 1/2 days of fishing...browns being the priority. The river is top shelf if you like trout fishing. Quite different from the rock, flounder and croaker here on the Chesapeake.

Thanks very much and I appreciate your generosity. I will definitely give Crow Mart / Crow Busters recognition when I give away the donations. It is shaping up to be a good turnout. The weather is looking good too.
Is there a way that I can check on when the PA State Crow Shoot will take place (2011)? Then I can make sure I don't have anything scheduled. I am from NW PA and I have a trip to Waldameer (in Erie) planned with the family on Sunday so I won't be able to join you for the fun.
My brother-in-law and I would love to be in the next one.
OH.. How do you determine what Class you hunt in (Novice, Intermediate, Super Expert)? Most crow hunters would like to think they are Super Experts..haha.
Wish everyone that participates Good Luck and have a safe day of hunting.
Looking forward to Sunday! Thanks for picking up the resposibility of running this shoot, it would have been a shame if it went away, it's a guarantee on my schedule every year. You kinda mentioned about the time this shoot has been running, I know my father has not missed one of these shoots in over 30 years and I have been doing the shoot for 20+ years, I started doing this shoot as a "spectator" when I was just 10 years old so I could learn how to crow hunt.........20+ later I'm still learning.........Corvis sure can be humbling!
Polish Hammer - the shoot is usually the first Sunday in July, but if that falls too close to the 4th then we push it to the following weekend. Next year the first Sunday is on the 3rd, so I will have a vote at the meeting after the shoot on when we should have it. I would guess that we will push it to the next Sunday (July 10th), because that will be a long holiday weekend for most and they will likely have family functions. If you want you can e-mail (pacrowshoot@gmail.com) me your address and I will put you on the mailing list for next year. The paperowork gets sent out usually about one month prior to the shoot. Also, I will likely post it on here next year.
New teams are classified as Novice the first year. Then depending on the number of crows they shoot they can move up to Intermediate the next year, and Super Expert the next. It is 0-15 birds for Novice, 16-24 birds for Intermedtiate and 25 or more for Super Expert.
Skinny2127 - it has been more work than I expected, but I am enjoying organizing the shoot. I also would have been bummed if no one would have volunteered, so I figured I would give it a shot. I am trying to build it back up to what I hear stories from the years gone by, and I am adding some additional prizes for this year. Not much, but more stuff to make it worth while. Good luck this year, and I can't wait for Sunday either.
Good to hear guys. We are getting everything wrapped up for the shoot. Just have to do some grocery shopping for the picnic lunch, and some other minor last minute stuff.
Doug @ Crowmart - I got my order today. Thanks a bunch for the upgraded order. You can bet that all the shooters will know about Crowmart / Crow Busters on Sunday when I'm giving out the prizes.
I have been watching the weather for about a week, and this is probably the one time that they kept the forecast the same for the weekend. You couldn't ask for better weather in July. Hopefully the crows like it. Probably the most action will be in the morning and then taper off as it gets warmer.
Mike was that you today busting some crows north of the edinboro ski lodge south of 6 N was it? Saw a few guys hunting while I was working they shot 8-10 times had them fired up. I yelled over to them if they got any but I was a few hundred yards away from them when they were walking out . There calling sounded good. Didn't know it wasn't crows till they started shooten.

Mike and the guys did a great job on the shoot, also thankyou very much to Crow Mart and Crow Busters for the support. Look forward to next years shoot. Good job again guys!
I am sure mike will post some more details later My novice 2 man team shot 12 crows total bird count for every one who shot at the shoot today was 251 crows Door prizes
trophys
shooter board
50/50 was 44 dollars I think the decoys for the door prize was a crow shooters prize PAC it had 6 decoys fully flocked 100 rds 12 ga shells and a crow call included. Every shooters name was in a bin and pulled for door prizes. The person who won the PAC was there first time shooting in this shoot. We also had a few gas cards for the drivers to put there name in for and drew them a prize also. The team that shot the most crows over all got 6 boxes of shells They shot 33 birds.

Justin - Thanks for posting your pictures, and I do have a group picture from the shoot but I haven't had the chance to get them on the computer.
We had a total of 33 shooters which was up from last year, and the total bird count was 251. That's not bad for a half day hunt in our area. Hopefully next year we will get the word out even more and get a couple more teams interested. It appeared that everyone had a good time. I didn't have any complaints, so to me it was a success.

Doug - I was planning on sending you one very soon as a thank you. I would have sent it out this morning, but I didn't have the proper sized envelope. Hopefully it will go out tomorrow.
SHANEDOG - I am very pleased with all the good comments that we are getting from the shoot. I was a little reluctant about what everyone was going to think, and was thinking that the hard work would go unnoticed. I am now happy that me and the others volunteered to continue the tradition. We are already starting on getting plans together to make it even better next year.
I my self thought we had bit off more than we should. When the previouse guys announced this was there last shoot a year ago. It was my first and loved it and when mike was the only one out of a room full of guys to speak up I had to help so I also said I'd do it. Then Dave a father of some shooters spoke up. I am glad we kept her going. And hope to make it bigger and better. Yup it's been less than a week since the shoot and mike Dave and my self have been shooten e mails about next year. But I still have to tip my hat to mike for being the first to commit to this undertaking of the shoot. He had more brass that day than I did.

Looks like you guys had a great day of crow hunting and camaraderie. I've been talking to Mike through email and I would like to participate next year in the hunt. I'm from NW PA (not quite as north as most guys). Definitely looking forward to it.
Mike - you have my email...if I can be of assistance next year, please let me know.
I from the Clarion County area. Waterford is about an hour/hour and a half drive for me. Just have to do my killing early so I can head north by 10:30..haha.
Hey this year I checked in a little after 11 cause I ran threw my spots quick. And I live bout 40 min south of Erie. It's nice when you pre register cause in all acuallity you could find that one spot first thing in the morning hunt from bout well this year from 6 am to 10-1030 that's still 4 hours of shootin. Just find that good morning stand and wack a few. It's a good time , and it will be better and better if we get more guys to BS with after the shoot is over.
