how rare is a piebald?

i'm not even sure if a crow with some white feathers is called a piebald or a color phase or something...........but, anyway, i've seen one twice in the last month thats first five or six wing feathers coming off the body are white.  the first time it jumped up in front of me while driving down the road and flew straight away.  gave me a good look.  this past wednesday, i saw it sitting in a tree above the road and could see a white bar toward it's lower wing on each side.   it's a first for me.  i was just wondering how rare this creature is?

Jo,

Piebald crows are quite rare in my opinion. To give you an example, I've been hunting them for most of my life and have shot 32 of them that I know of. Now 32 might sound like a lot, but it's a very small number compared to the over 144,000 that I've shot during the past 38 years. This was on almost 1,500 crow hunts during this time period.

Go to the "Oddities Section" on the home page and you will see all sorts of piebald crows shot by other members from around the USA.

thanks guys. the crows in the 3rd from bottom picture and 4th from bottom picture in the oddities section look most like the one i'm seeing. the only difference is that it's feathers are bright white instead of brownish and they are like that on both sides. i need to knock on a few farmers doors in the area before our season goes out late february.

I've shot them with bits of white in their wing feathers. Nothing more than that.

Thanks for the pics Bob. The one I shot had like every other feather on the wing was white on both sides. I was going to mount it. I wish I would have now. I didn't think that they were that rare.

A piebald, rare as it is, doesn't haunt Skip like the Great White Crow!

Hi Phil,

I have never seen a pure white crow in the wild. When a guy gets a piebald crow it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, dumb luck to be sure.
