Rescind the Second Amendment

From The Washington Post,
Published: December 20

All the talk about gun reform that we are beginning to hear will result, at best, only in Band-Aid treatment. Let’s get to the root of the gun problem: the Second Amendment.

The Prohibition amendment did not work, so we rescinded it. Gun control as we know it today does not work within the framework of the Second Amendment; the situation in 2012 is hardly comparable to the circumstances of 1789. Let’s start anew: Rescind the Second Amendment and pass meaningful gun legislation unbridled by constitutional restraints.

Good can come from the horrible tragedy in Newtown. We can take on an amendment that has seemed untouchable.

I think that people who are not beholden to the National Rifle Association can and will be elected. The time is here, and we should seize on it. Bandaging won’t work. Surgery is necessary to cut out this cancer on our society that metastasizes every day.

I know you put this here as only an example of the D.C., leftist, statist, progressiveist, totalitarian thinking that we face.

Didn't you?

I saw on the news that the NRA is getting an average of 8,000 new memembers a day now! There is safety in numbers!

I'm just waiting for one of the parents to sue the school because there were no teachers permitted to carry a firearm.

It's not about gun control at all, it's about controling all of us with no means to resist!

Time to Repeal the Second Amendment. Seriously.
Posted: 12/20/2012 10:10 am on The Huffington Post:

It continues to befuddle my mind that the USA permits its citizens to arm themselves with a personal arsenal. In some states, I understand, it's even legal to carry concealed weapons to work.

After the Aurora shooting, handgun sales in Colorado soared, assisted in no small way by certain politicians claiming that if others had weapons in the cinema they could have taken out the shooter.

Yes. In a dark, smoke-filled theatre full of panicking patrons and gunfire, the solution is for more people to start firing rounds in whatever direction they think the shooter might be.

I have a simple solution for the USA. It might be a tough sell, but I think you're at that point:

Repeal the Second Amendment.

Here's a consciousness-raising exercise: In the year it was ratified, would the Second Amendment have allowed an individual to mount a loaded cannon on the back of a carriage and drive it through town? I predict not. But today's firearms, with increased accuracy, automatic reloading and mega-clips of 50 or 100 bullets, are easily capable of killing as many people as an 18th century cannon and they're substantially easier to aim.

So if the amendment did not intend to permit cannons, then what is the justification for permitting equally powerful weapons today? Merely miniaturisation?

It seems to me that the Founding Fathers made two critical mistakes when drafting the amendment: Firstly, they didn't allow for technological improvement. They had no idea that in the ensuing centuries, we would spend so much time improving our capacity for hand-held destruction. I suggest that it is this modern-day capacity for mass-murder that makes the 18th century amendment unconscionable.

Compounding with the technology, the "right of the people to keep and bear arms," plural, does not suggest a limit on the number of guns an individual can own, carry or conceal. It is incomprehensible to me that the Founding Fathers deliberately endorsed this kind of all-you-can-eat fire-power.

But it seems that case-law on the matter has ignored the proviso of "a well-regulated militia" and erred largely on the side of wanton destruction, so the only way to stop this insanity is to repeal the amendment entirely.

You need 40 states to approve the repeal by a simple majority, yes? So get campaigning! Perhaps start by outing the NRA as the violence-supporting organisation they are. These massacres that seem to be occurring ever-more-frequently in the USA have all been made possible by the NRA's insistence that fully automatic, concealed weapons with armour-piercing rounds are not what kill people.

The Norquist pledge not to increase taxes seems to be taken very seriously. Perhaps a new pledge could be drafted: A pledge by politicians to never accept money from the NRA or NRA-financed super-PACs. A pledge to instigate a referendum on repealing the Second Amendment.

A pledge affirming that, say, children are more important than gun-rights.

Once again Jon, good read.

The point the liberals ignore about the second amendment is it is there to protect US from them... and The GOVERNMENT they so love!!!

I'm trying to decide if this guy is serious - Mr. thepain, if you are indeed serious I suggest you are barking up the wrong tree on this site.....You might do better going with the Huffington Post or some other site where the folks are more in tune with your thinking. Bumper sticker slogans sometimes actually make sense and one that I think is perfectly accurate is......."When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns."

lol, mr. thefan, i suggest that you haven't read my many posts here over the years... especially the ones on the old crowbusters site, when i was more politically active.

or my titles in my signature

or my several other websites, dedicated to the second amendment, predator hunting, etc etc.

for clarification (which i didn't think would be needed,) let me say that i posted those opinion pieces and editorials because i wanted to share the shock that i felt, that people in this country that i love would be so quick to flush it all down the toilet for the sake of their misguided agendas. and also as a wakeup call to my family here on crowbusters.

and just fyi, you may speak to me directly. there's no need to refer to me in the third person.

It's not about gun control at all, it's about controling all of us with no means to resist!

Bob A.

you are right on target with that, Bob.

Mr. Jon, please accept my apologies - I'm very pleased to hear that we are of like mind on this and, I would suspect, many other things. You can write off my knee-jerk reaction to the fact that I feel sick deep in my guts over recent events in our country and the sobering fact that I see absolutely no bright spots on the horizon. As an old fart I have a hell of a lot more days behind me than I do ahead of me and the madness that the scum are bringing about on a daily basis will affect my kids and grandkids far more that will affect me. For this I mourn......

 Pardon my venting.

I wish you and all the other Crowbusters a Merry Christmas and pray for a happier New Year !!!!!!!!

Editors and the like make a living off of the news of the day and they have got to print anything to justify their existence. Now while the author is sincere, he is simply writing his views no matter how warped and unrealistic. Just what i need to know, I cannot go outside or anywhere because the good guys won't be armed. I can go outside now and walk freely about fearing only a rabid animal as the bad guys don't know who is going armed.
One thing they won't tell you is if a bad guy survives a shooting he must explain to the police why he was shot in the hospital. He doesn't want that and he must go to the hospital too if he is shot. They won't tell you that either..guns deter crime -not encourage it.
Just because someone has money and owns a publishing company and a typewriter doesn't make them exceptionally smart-only RICH. A typewriter has no brain! And neither does a hundred dollar bill!
