Last day of the IL season hunt
Permalink

Since it was the last day of the season, I decided to take the day off and get out one last time before I put all of my crow gadgets away. It started out well with a west wind at 10-15mph that would quickly switch to an east wind just before sunrise. Fortunately I was pretty well covered from both sides to allow for crows to come from the north, east or west. I had bought a Johnny Stewart crow revellie tape that I had found at a local farm supply store for $4, an awesome find and well worth the money. From about 6:30am to 9:30am the crows came pretty well with some lulls in the action. I ended up knocking down 11, but had a hopper take off onto the neighboring property and was only able to recover 10. I think I could have hit a few more, but the shells I was using kept jamming. I usually use the cheapest Federal ammo I can find (usually $28 per 100) however I had found some Winchester for $26 per 100 and decided to try those. They would jam the action closed after each shot, and I would have to place the buttstock on my knee and yank down on the foregrip to get the shell to eject. All in all, it was a good way to end the season.

Also, I'm a stone cold decoy killer at 10 yards...

Nice report and pics. A good use of a day off I would say.

If I told you that I never shot a decoy, I'd be lie'n.

Another time had a crow start to land on my call that was out on the ground about 35 yards out! Pulled the trigger just before he landed then realized what I almost did,was lucky!

I've had pheasant hunters shoot my decoys-one numbskull did it twice before I jumped up and yelled:"WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU SHOOTING AT!?!?

This is the first decoy I've shot, and of course it was the newest one with the nice flocking... Guess I'll be upgrading to the hard plastic decoys.

NG,

You'll be able to kill crows over that decoy no problem.

I still put this one out from time to time:

well it wasn't damaged...you can see where it was hit however. if you pick it up it'll rattle. Hunter so called number one came off the road into the field and blasted. He had little round glasses and a General Burnsides mustache and dressed head to foot in navy blue; and some kind of fat blue hat like a taxi cap or something. I was angry and jumped out of the trench. H e was wicked apologetic and i went from anger to laughter. He wandered off to the far side of the field-whiskey breath and all, and ironically the crows headed over me and my hunting partner A few weeks later I was at the west end of that field and some pick up truck came down the framers' road and some lunatic jumped out and began shooting at my decoys! I don't specifically recall any damage but I think a few bbs whatever were in the dekes somewhere...That dummy shot twice and then roared with laughter then jumped back in the truck and his partner roared out of there!

the decoy was probably only 10 yards or so behind me and above me in a dead tree. Close enough to take the head off and not much else.
