Spring Shooting

I can't help but notice the lack of dead crow posts as of late. Guess most members I would assume are grounded as crow "seasons" are likely over and done south of the 49th.

Up here in Canada the spring shoot is winding down. I shot one single blind for most of April with great success. All hunts were morning shoots, from sunup until about 0900, where I catch small groups moving northward.

Further, all hunts were solo except for one which I shared with my 10 year old son. I bagged 10 crows that morning... and he 3. His were shot fairly in flight with a lowly Mossberg 500 410 pump, throwing 1/2 ounce of  7 1/2 shot. Quite the excitement for myself to see my son connecting on crows!

Thus far I have managed to bag almost 200 crows from this single location. I have included a few pics for your viewing pleasure! Take note of my blind which offer almost total concealment. Covering was initially white but have switched to brown as of late.

I was beginning to worry that something was wrong out there. Thanks for the report plus photos! I needed them.smile

I carry my hand call sometimes while out working in the yard (here in town...) to try to annoy the local townie crows. Usually successful, good practice. However, no blood or feathers flying about. no

Thanks for the report and pictures. Our season ends 3/31, so all quiet here. As I have been turkey hunting a few times I have tried to capture some new crow sounds. Not real great yet, but trying. Crows have split up from large winter roosts and are nesting. Not sure when baby crows hatch, but when they do, crows will be aggressive on "their" golf course.

Have a good Spring and Summer!

M12: Fine pics.. fine shooting, fine total!! I particularly like your blind as it is high enough you can come close to standing without exposing your position and it would seem to provide top cover as well. Us southerners do not often get to shoot crows in the snow like you do,  but we did get  some "white action" this year. Thanks to all the frigid weather and layers of snow and ice up north, I suspect many more crows than normal were pushed our way. Our peanut fields and pecans offered fine buffets for the crows and a finer opportunity for us to provide them a warm southern welcome. smile

As always, a great story, Ted!  Especially about your son. (As an aside, you're a better man than I am as I wouldn't think of handicapping my boy with a .410!)  But he performed admirably and scored better than I could have done with the tiny tube!

We're hitting 90 during the late afternoon here in the Lone Star State, so I'm confused by that white substance on the ground in your photos.  I am heartened by the finely composed shot of the Model 12 receiver and stock. Worn blued steel and black walnut with your son - doesn't get any better!

Have a great spring!

Enjoyed the post, good to hear you put a lot on the ground. Comments about your son's sucess with a 410 was great to hear.
Pic's were excellent. Mid 80's here in Bama, ticks , chiggers , no-shoulders have taken over. Time for me to find some more places to
hunt this fall and winter. Hope you get more hunts in and can share them.
