The Incredible 20 gauge shotgun skills of Bob A.

I never saw anyone  whose hit ratio was virtually 99% with a 20 gauge at the heights Bob A. nailed his crows. Some dropped like bombs , some dropped violently spinning like a horizontal top...some exploded when they got mighty close...but he often called his shots  with comical satirical comments like "Bye' and "Oohh that had to hurt!!"

One interesting thing was all the crows were headed in one direction...that is a crow shooters dream even before we see the type of shooting where the crow coming in is going to get nailed seemingly at any height with that trusty 20 gauge sharpshooting pulling them down from otherwise anti-aircraft heights.

I heard the American embassy had to hold a meeting with moon aliens as Bobs;' shot was dusting the moon!

But every shot Bob took by and large knocked them down. I never would have put my  reliance on a 20 gauge but that's just me. After seeing Bob A; I doubt my own beliefs...when that gun went 'BOOM" a crow or two would drop. Some of the shots created hilarious crazy behavior by the shot crow. But you have to see his DVDs to understand this...out of the some four hundred crows he shot, only a tiny tine percentage managed to get away but even so I know one he shot at with 3 rounds did slip away but hardly unscathed. But this was highly unusual.

The beauty of it all is no is there to interrupt you. The farms look like a tiny speck on the horizon. But you will need a pick up truck with a 4X4 to get to these areas but the incredible shooting  by Bob A. really makes it worth while if anyone can shoot like he does. I consider myself a close range specialist..(Joking) but Bob A. can do it all...that height he applied his 20 gauge is proof of that. Who would have thought that anyways? And he did it with trap loads!

I learned something about watching those DVDs concerning BobA. and no one can know too much...he did a ton of shooting with but two home made crows. You kneed to see it...after all wouldn't we all want to carry more ammunition?

Hey Motiondecoy,

I also enjoy watching Bob's DVDs. But, even Bob will admit that he doesnt shoot near a 100% average.

...you do realize that the videos are edited right?

Not until I watched one the second time did I notice that there was editing..also i stand corrected...I believe it was clay pigeon loads in 20 gauge..skeet loads as Bob informed me but i didn't learn to shoot crows practicing on clay pigeons...it was totally unrealistic..I've seen duck hunters who couldn't a crow to beat the band. But I told them what to do an d man oh man they did not seem able to miss!
I'll say right now I don't know what a trap or a skeet load is or the differences. I am clay pigeon ignorant. With me so long as the gun goes ((BANG)) when i pull the trigger is basically all I know..
I learned how to shoot crows by shooting starlings even though they fly a lot faster when so inclined.....but it still took awhiles. I am average and i couldn't do what Bob is doing not without a hell of a lot more crows. But in time this too will change. I apparently have to go to them. things have changed around here-no crows! just a few every so often..and i am not going after that pathetically small roost of 30 birds either...

By the way that pic does look like someone I knew years ago as to what he might look like today however. But none the less I will start looking for hidden cameras here...

Actually what came to mind this time was the line from the movie in Heartbreak Ridge at the 9 second point of this clip.

Hi Honk,

When the birds come in well many times the average can be above 80%. Now it depends how you figure the average, say you shoot at a hundred crows and kill 94 of them on a real good day with let us say 126 rounds of ammo. That would be 74% for an average on a day where you killed 94 out of a hundred birds you shot at. I would say I shot 74% but another way to look at it is that you got 94% of what you shot at.

I had some shoots with Dick last season where only a hand full got away during the whole shoot. The birds came in one or two at a time where you can run some dandy percentages.

Motion Decoy, got some film footage from me that would have been "The Art of crow Hunting; Two" and that was unedited film footage. That film footage would require very little editing.

Honk, if you have "Crow Shooting" the last hunt over the soybean field required very little editing. I had to take my jacket off in the dead of winter, I was getting so warm from the shooting. That was a fun hunt, rolled 467 in 4 hours.

Jason,

Here is a shoot from November 4th 1983 where I had one of the best percentages of my life.

From 4:10 P.M. to 5:35 P.M. I rolled 99 crows with 104 20 gauge hulls with a skeet load of # 9'. s. Wind NNE 10 - 15 MPH, I was using a Smith & Wesson 20 gauge pump gun. That is a 95% average, all the shooting was at close quarters that afternoon.

Here is a shoot from December 13th 1987 where I shot 302 crows with 373 20 gauge hulls # 9 shot. 7:25 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. It was overcast that morning & snow was expected. 80% average that morning taking them as they came. Used a Model 870 Remington Pump. Wind calm, 32 degrees out, made 3 triples and had a chance to get 4 out of 5 on one pass and blew it!

Here is a shoot with Jim Lundquist from November 14th 1987 where the birds were very erratic that afternoon (wind SE 25 to 30 MPH) in that wind. 2:15 P.M. to 5:10 P.M. Jim used a 16 gauge 870 and I used a 20 gauge 870 with # 9's. We shot 349 crows and my average was 48% and Jim's was not much better, he said "I won't tell anyone if you won't" we got a good laugh over that.

Here is a shoot from December 15th 1982 Boyd Robeson shot 467 and I shot 392 from 8:30 A.M. to 4:45 P.M. We both shot 859 crows that day, our largest shoot together. 45 degrees out, wind North 5 MPH I used a Smith & Wesson model 3000 20 gauge pump with # 9's. I used 591 20 gauge hulls for a 66% average that day. We had 430 down by 11:30 A.M. that day. Boyd used a pair of model 12 20 gauges using # 9's.

Here is another from November 17th 1992 with Boyd Robeson & I. Boyd shot 300 and I shot 283 that afternoon. I used 456 20 gauge hulls # 8 shot out of an 870 Remington. I had a 62% average that day. I made a notation that day that the largest shoots Boyd & I shared together up to that point was 510, 519, 520, 542, 573, "583" 611, 635, 657, and 859.

A week or so later I went out solo on November 26th 1992 and shot 336 crows with 432 20 gauge hulls in # 8 & # 9 shot. Had a 78% average that day from 9:30 A.M. to 3:20 P.M. Shot a piebald crow on that shoot. 2 inches of snow cover, wind N NW 10 to 20 MPH.

Went out 9 days later & shot 424 crows on December 5th 1992 with 558 20 gauge hulls (76% average) with # 9 shot. I ran out of ammo at 10:35 A.M. Shot from 7:40 A.M. to 10:35 A.M. Wind east 5 mph 24 degrees out & expect more snow. Got another piebald crow on that hunt.

Went out on December 16th 1992 and shot 391 crows with 500 20 gauge hulls in # 8 shot, 78% average that hunt. 7:45 A.M. to 2:40 P.M. No e- caller & no decoys, just used the dead crows and used 3 hand calls, all Mallardtone. Had to hoof it in because it was to wet to drive! I shot two piebald crows on this hunt.

Here is a shoot with Jim Lundquist on January 4th 1993. We shot 453 crows from 7:45 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Wind NW 10 to 20 mph 27 degrees out & partly cloudy. I used 318 20 gauge hulls in # 9 shot for a 75% average. I shot 239 and Jim shot 214 that day. Jim used an 870 16 gauge with one ounce of # 8's.

January 5th 1993 Jim & I shot 376 crows from 10:45 A.M. to 3:45 P.M. I got another piebald crow on that hunt. I made a notation that this was the 5th piebald crow I've shot this year so far. Jim 182 Bob 194 I used 239 20 gauge hulls in # 9 shot for an 81% average that hunt. Made another note, "went over the 60,000 mark since 1974" I used a 20 gauge 870 in FC.

February 7th 1993 Boyd 93 Bob 157 Boyd & I shot 250 crows from 7:50 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. Wind SW 10 to 20 mph. 64 degrees out & clear. I used 191 12 gauge hulls in a trap load 7 1/2 shot for an 82% average. Used the 12 gauge 870.

March 23rd 1993 I shot 170 crows with 206 20 gauge hulls in # 9 shot. 83% average on that hunt. Made one triple and 6 or 8 doubles on that hunt. 6:30 A.M. to 9:10 A.M. Wind N 5 to 10 MPH 37 degrees out. This was my last hunt of the season.
