Crow calling tips

This is my first year crow hunting and even though I haven't broken double digit numbers it has been the second best hunting I have ever enjoyed (opening day of dove will always be my #1). I am wanting to know if you all have any advise that will help with the learning curve. I have a foxpro that is working but I like calling with mouth calls more. I am using the one I use for a turkey locator but that's it. How many calls should I have? What are the differences? When I build my fixed blind is there anything you wish you had avoided or incorporated in yours? How long is to long to wait while doing a run and gun? What do you all use to carry everything for a run and gun? Can I reflock my decoys or is it cheaper to buy a bag tat protects them? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. Hopefully this Friday I will finally break my double digit mark.

jacobhwrd,

Welcome to the forum, hunters on here will help you a lot. I can tell you about the flocking. We put ours individually in chain store plastic shopping bags and it protects the flocking to a degree. Hope that helps some.

Jacob -

Welcome... not sure how many calls you should have, but you probably want 2 or 3 in addition to the one you have. There are several available on the Store here, and they vary greatly. I have collected 10-12, but use 3-4 mainly (not all that well either) -- I would order a new call and give it to my daughter to give to me for Christmas when she was younger. Try some different ones if you prefer mouth calls -- overall, they might be more effective than e-callers, I think.

If you have a fixed blind, brush that puppy in with natural materials. I always wish I brushed more. I like it fairly tall so that I can sit on my swivel bucket and still be just below the top of the blind -- full blind sides and rear helps, too. (See pictures of some blinds on various threads on this Forum. You can also search any of your topics on this Forum, and check out the Beginner and Advance articles on the Crow Busters website.)

For run and gun, I try to just travel lighter - 4-6 decoys. I am willing to hit another spot after 15-20 minutes of no action. You can reflock your decoys -- there are kits and instructions. It can be a bit of work to do it well, but it's worth it. You should also protect them the best you can -- I do not bag them individually, but I do use care when packing and carrying.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Have fun! There is a lot to know about crows and crow hunting.

Thanks for the advise. I am actually on my way out of town for the weekend to meet my brother at our farm to hunt the rut here in KY. Today will be all crow though since modern gun doesn't open till Saturday. Talked my other brothers into trying crow instead of bow hunting since we have 3 weekends of modern gun. Lol lucky we are from zone 1. My older brother has been wanting to try crow for a while but never got around to it. Hopefully they will both like it as much as i do. I will try and use your advise. I have already gotten a couple of new calls on my way to work last night since i wasn't sure what to do. Lol i already have dozens of calls for everything else i hunt. Why not crow. so hopefully it works well. I will be getting a membership when i get back Sunday and look forward to reading the articles that come with that.

Hi There, the advice on calling I would give is DONT USE CROW FIGHT, not until the very end of your hunt for a grand finale, less is more with the calling, I try and use "natural " sounding crow sounds and calls, so as not to alert them of danger, they will always come in way higher when using crow fight and similar sounds, I like them coming in low and slow, not a care in the world, I often have them wanting to land, in fact just the other day i had one come in 15 feet off the deck and land in the tree directly above me 12 feet away; lets just say it didnt end well for him....
