Careful during deer season & Crow with a slug
Permalink

Last weekend, after deer hunting in the morning, I decided to go pop a few crows.  I chose a small slice of public land, and with a small spread began calling.  There were some deer hunters in the area, but at what I thought was a safe distance.  I also heard what sounded like someone target shooting, still at a fair distance.  As I leaned against a tree, I heard quite a wzzzzzzz go by and realized it was a stray bullet or slug.  Now I know why I don't hunt crows until after December 15th.  I won't do that again!

Today, I was deer hunting in the morning (during which I always observe and listen to crows, and hope to capture some audio recordings on my smartphone).  After about 9:00 AM, I was bored and we were going to head out anyway, so I radioed my son and said, "I think I'm gonna' take out this crow."

So, I turned on my Xcel Spypoint videocam, and took a poke at one sitting on a low branch with three of his buddies at 90 yards.  I have an 1187 Special Purpose deer gun and I shoot Remington 3" Premier Accutips.  I was hoping to get two in line on the branch, but only got one.  The crow hung upside down for a moment, and then dropped off and the other three flew off and circled going nuts.  They were very upset and did not know what happened.  They pretty much screamed for the next 10-12 minutes and rallied every crow in the vicinity. What a ruckus!!

So, this is what an Accutip does to a crow at 90 yards.  The link is to the video -- not the best quality, and the audio is no good, but it gives you an idea of the shot.

I am not the most successful crow hunter, but this was some redemption for years of "Crows are still winning."

Never heard of that before! Anyways nice shot! Maybe i will keep some of that around here!

Best thing to do when that happens-shots flying around? Crawl on your belly to the trees! had a neighbor once whom I warned about using a backstop! Imagine my surprise when rounds started whizzing around me!

Jerry,
One heck of shot! Impressive to do that with a shotgun. The snow really looks nice but Being down south our snows only last 1 to 3 days that is enough for me, I guess it's what you get accustom to, plus y'all are way better prepared than us. Weatherman can predict 1 inch here and within 2 hrs stores will be almost out of milk and bread.
Have you taken any deer? Our gun season started mid Nov. and I haven't went yet and the rut which I enjoy hunting doesn't crank up till mid Jan. here

Hey Butch... yes, in fact, I went back out this afternoon and got a nice doe. The rut here is usually late Oct-early Nov during bow season. Gun season ends Dec 7, then Muzzleloader and "Late" Bow season is from 12/8 - 12/16. After that is when I usually start crow hunting.

Nice shooting Jerry. Isn't it funny that as a crow hunter, it never seems to matter what other animal you may be hunting on a given day, you always turn your head a pay attention when you here the crows.........biggrin
