Went on a crow hunt Friday morning. Should have been an easy 100 bird body count. Nice pecan orchard surrounded by peanut fields. Had two buddies with me. Got everything set up and it looked good. Right from the start the birds would stay high or flare if they came in low. I kept looking for the problem and couldn't figure it out. Finally I walked about 25 yards away and looked back at my buddies. Both were shooting nice shotguns and turns out both were SHINEY as all get out. I shoot a camo 870. So, now I have another thing to worry about. LOL

Didn't try to pick all the birds up since most fell in some real thick stuff on the edge but I would guess we killed somewhere in the 50s or 60s. Sorry no picture this time.

Hi Barry,

I was shooting in a 15 to 25 mph breeze last week and when the crows would see you standing up to shoot they did some outstanding manuvers in the air. They can turn on a damn dime in mid air, I missed the ones that would turn 90 degrees faster than you can blink your eyes in that breeze! You always shoot right in front of those types of shots because the crow has changed course in a heartbeat.

Hi Bob,

We were shooting at Brian's dads place. The wind was perfect and we should have had a great shoot. The guys did challenge me a time or two on some SUPER high birds. Even though I was shooting my 12 with field loads I knocked them down like I was shooting a 10 gauge with turkey loads! LOL I do love those high birds!

Yes, shiny "aint" good.. tickles me some guys show up with these " collectible " and what should be in a "show case"  shotguns and think they are going to kill crows.. When I hunted with Tomlin he would provide cammo " duck / duct" tape to cover the shiny "well oiled" barrels for his clients..

Not a bad idea. My guns get used hard. The shine has been wore off a long time ago!

Hi Barry,

Yup, you do have a good feel on high birds.

How is your season going so far?

How come "should have had a great shoot" what went wrong?

Shiney objects and clothing on hunters that move around a lot will save a lot of crows. With this said I can honestly say I have shot thousands of crows with normal old school blued firearms and no cammo clothing...in a decent hide. Shot a bunch one time wearin white shorts and a dress shirtbiggrin

The day before there were a few hundred birds in the area. The next morning we just didn't have many show up and those that did were not coming in close enough. I don't think anyone had shot them in the area. So, I just don't know what was up.

I would have to agree with Ted, if you are in a good blind and you keep the muzzle of your shotgun down below the top of the blind "and hold still" there should be no problem at all.

Barry,

Good that you were able to figure it out, couple times I never could figure what we were doing wrong. I just chalked it up to smart crows. Still 60's not a bad a:m shoot congrats!
Took a little time off on the crows to recoup, hoping to go this weekend if the weather cooperates, got some crows that need to feel some lead!
