Crow-shooting with killerky!

Hey guys, just a quick report without any pics.  (have one of some corn stalks and decoys, but you've all seen those!)  I was fortunate to have an opportunity to shoot with killerky from this forum on the weekend, and what an amazing experience it was.  I think I may have overestimated the reach of my MOD choke 12ga. and #7-1/2 shot, but, killerky didn't give me too hard a time about it!  He sure has his system down, and even in (what he considered) to be less than stellar conditions, he did make the sky turn black on numerous occasions.  Had I not seen so many crows so successfully called-in, I would have never believed it possible.   There goes my affection for my new mouth calls!

Thanks again killerky, really hoping we can meet for a shoot again in the coming weeks/months.

So how many did the two of you shoot?

What were the conditions outside? Windy, breezy or calm? Flyway shoot or field hunt? How long did the hunt last? Morning hunt or afternoon hunt?

Hey Bob~I wasn't counting, but killerky was. I shot 67, but there was only a slight wind (from the wrong direction) and next to no cloud cover. With only a short time to hunt, we parked in one spot killerky picked but it proved to be excellent in my opinion. I think killerky was hoping for better numbers/conditions, but as a complete greenhorn myself...I was thrilled. Having seen how well his methods work, I'm confident he's forgotten more than I'll ever know! :)

Was this in the afternoon or morning?

When you say you had only a short time to hunt that day what are we talking about ? 1 hour, 2 hours or 3 hours? How long did the shooting last? Example: 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

What make & model shotgun does Killerky use?

Glad you made it down Rob. It wasn't a great day but it came together well in the end.

Bob, I had a funeral and things going on that day so by the time we scouted the area it was after 3pm. The wind was wrong for just about every spot that I hunt ( now I need to go get different spots for the bad wind days). By the time I decided to set up at a spot it was after 330pm. I just took a fairly good guess on where I thought the best chance for him to shoot a good number of birds in that area. So he shot from after 330 till 5pm. So 1hr and 20mins or so. I didn't do much shooting as I was running the clicker and the remote for the caller plus using the binoculars to see when and where the birds were coming from.
For my gun I use the beretta xtrema 2 and that day I was using some number 5's that a friend reloaded and wanted me to try. Normally it's 7.5's but on days when they could be out there a bit I try 6's or 5's.

What was the trick with the caller?  Sounds, cadence, volume?

I switch sounds depending on what the birds do. But a lot of times I control the volume more than most. If the crows aren't looking very hard I find I low volume gets them in for a better look after I call them in from far with high volume. Then I play with the mute and switch it up when I need too. What works for me is different for others

Thanks killer...

Just curious because I have many sounds and often feel like I call too much. I absolutely control the volume a lot, though. I start softly if I hear crows, and if it's slow I'll crank it to reach out and back it off pretty quickly if they start coming. I also usually try to keep it friendly/feeding, and go to fighting/dying as a last resort.

I have seen others (online videos, etc.) that just blast the caller and let it run, and kill a ton of crows. That surprises me, but hey, my success isn't that great. I'll keep trying - it's an ongoing experiment.

Good job! Sounds like a great hunt. I want a call operator and scout with binoculars on my hunts!!

Jerry

Killerky,

How did you arrive at that handle?

The only three things a crow hunter needs to remember when the shooting starts is "shoot the crow, hit the counter and load the gun" my friend Jim Lundquist used to say that all the time years ago.

Beretta makes a very reliable firearm, good choice on your part!

Yup, I always have a pair of binocs in my blind bag so I can watch as well during a flyway shoot. Knowing where not to be is just as important as knowing where to be!

Roughly how far were you from the roost this afternoon or yesterday afternoon ?

Do you also have a steady job besides taking people out?

I'm quite sure you made Crow Whisperer's day!

Jerry,
I try to be as mobile as I can which is why in some areas I have the quad with me and my binos. Can get up and go quick if you need to move to get on them better. I've just blasted the caller many times and had good luck. I just now try to not show them everything unless I need too.

Bob,

When I was a little kid my grandpa called me the great white hunter( I trapped a bunch of raccoons for him and was always out hunting). When I got older some of the the guy that I do martial arts with call me killer. My mom calls me Kyman. So I figured great white hunter was to long of a handle so I switched to killerky. I've used it on many fourms now for yrs.

I have shot many many rounds through that gun without a problem.
The roost here stretches over a bigger area but we were about maybe 3 miles from the beginning of it. I'm looking for more spots at that 7-11 mile range but most of my area is 3-5. Some are 8 more.

I work full time for the school board down this way doing floors and other small maintenance tasks.
I guide a bit on the side for ducks and geese and the crows just came along once people saw what I could go out and shoot most days. Then those clients became crow hunters too. Its harder now that I have 3 young kids but the boys will come with me anytime.
I more friends out than clients and most clients I've taken out for yrs. Crow whisperer was taken out as a friend and I know he was happy. I hope he comes back down and we will have more success.

I liked them. They hit hard. The pattern will have holes in it for sure but you can throw a lot of energy out there at a greater distance if they want to hang up.
