I haven't been on the forum in quite awhile...didn't shoot very many crows this season....mostly waterfowl.  I did get out with my camera today and got a few.  Thanks for taking a look.

As before, very nicely done and sharp as can be! Thanks!

Mike,

Simply outstanding the detail you get in your photos!

Since you are a very good camera buff I wanted to ask your opinion on what camera and lens I should buy for good action photos. I have a digital camera with a fixed zoom lens but the shudder speed is just to damn slow. I get some decent photos with it but what I really want is a very good wide angle lens, 28mm that has some magnification to it. What would you suggest with out having a $ 6,000 dollar lens made up?

Thank you for your time on this matter.

Bob A.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the kind words.  As far as my equipment for photographing birds and pretty much all wildlife, I went with Canon about 10 to 12 years back.  I choose Canon because of the diversity and quality of their telephoto lenses.  Camera bodies come and go over the years, but lenses are pretty much a lifetime investment.

I'm currently shooting with a Canon 5D Mark III, and a 7D Mark II.  The 5D is a full frame body, while the 7D is a crop sensor body.  Both produce excellent images, and I'm quite happy with both bodies.  I shoot with mostly all Canon lenses, but due to the expense of these guys, I also use Tamron and Sigma lenses.  The telephoto lenses that I use most for my day to day bird photography are these two:   the Canon 500 mm L series, prime lens, and the Canon 100-400 L series II zoom lens (this is a new lens that is really amazing).

You mentioned that you would like a wide angle lens (28mm) that has some magnification to it.  Since wide angle lenses don't magnify, you need to consider a zoom lens that gives you both wide angle and some telephoto ability.  The very best buy on the market today for the money, in my opinion, is the Canon L series (L series are Canon's top of the line lenses) Canon 24-105mm f4  lens.  It's an older lens, but still gives major sharp images.  I've seen them as cheap as $500.

Bob, please call me on my cell phone (559 960-9455) if you have any questions on cameras or lenses.  I'd be very happy to chat with you.

Mike,

I had a 28mm lens (wide angle) on a Olympus 35mm that used film. I put a doubler on it and it gave me 56mm wide angle which took this photo. I'm looking to capture action photos where you can see more of the shooter and the birds being shot at.

The next photo was taken with my digital camera and the content is good (but could be a lot better with the right lens) but I would like more magnification so I can be closer to the shooter.

Thank you for your help. What is a good time to call you?

Bob A.

Bob,

Give me a call tomorrow (Saturday) later in the morning or in the afternoon if that will work for you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Mike,

I left a massage on your phone.

What body would you suggest for the Canon 24-105mm zoom lens? Can you get a good body for less than a thousand dollars? How about Best Buy for prices on this equipment?

Bob,

Most of the Canon Rebel DSLR's will likely work out okay for what you want to do, but I'm going to recommend the Canon 70D, because it does do well for photographing birds as well as what you are looking for in a camera. You can get a Rebel T3i for under $500 and it will do the job, but the 70D is a major jump in quality for around $1000.  Best Buy frequently offer great prices on cameras.  I've purchased a couple through them. Mike,

Thank you for all your help.

Max, the fella you spoke with over the phone is going to put your knowledge to work when he takes photos of wildlife.

My pleasure, Bob....and as far as your friend Max is concerned, I'm certain he is much more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to photography.  Please tell him I enjoyed talking to him the other day on the phone.

Mike, I looked up your site on the internet. The refugerat.com is very nice, even saw a photo of you with a lens on your camera that would pay for a trip to Argentina to hunt waterfowl! Max was so inspired by your waterfowl photos that he is now ordering camo clothing in order to blend in with the march more completely. He is taking your advise......"get close to the subject you want to photograph"
