Scientific evidence that Michigan spring has arrived!

This morning, I drove a whole one mile outside of the city limits to see if I could work off some frustration on our “townies,” who fly about our small town making their racket with impunity inside the city limits where shooting is illegal. I set up behind a friend’s home; a place I had hunted one year ago and had nailed four. Today’s TBC = four (photo #3). I also educated two, each of whom left some feathers drifting downward as they hurriedly bugged out of the area. The hunt included two “Murphy’s Law” events: (1) as a bandit came in low and slow right at 12 o’clock in front of my face—during a “lull,” while I was pouring a cup of coffee. He leisurely flew over me and attended to his business and (2) the usual one that does the same thing as you tear your gear down. Oh well…

The science part.

Well, I made a lengthy posting last Wednesday about my hunt as Big Honkers’s guest. It was 15 degrees colder, very deep snow, with a crust on top which made our getting about the set-up a good bit of exercise. Please note photo #1 where the bandit I shot hit the ground hard, making a small crater in the crust, bouncing a couple of feet to the left. Photo #2 from this morning is proof of how much the snow has softened since then, as this bandit went down headfirst like an arrow, ending up looking rather like a duck in the shallows grubbing around for food*. Gentlemen, this is indisputable confirmation that the snow is softer today and without a crust. Therefore, it is warmer and spring is here. Case closed.

Oh yeah, the direction this bird came from means he had probably just visited the Wal-Mart parking lot, about ½ mile in the background—“Thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart!”

(*another nice "splatter" shot)

Glad to see you punished a few there OA! Nothing more conclusive as to arrival of spring than a few bandits turned lawn dart into a snowbank... and yes, you are shooting some pretty built up areas there!

Glad you used the term "lawn dart." I was thinking of that myself. biggrin

I am, however, outside of the city limits. AND, I have written permission of the owner, per Michigan Law!*

(*We have this law that says to shoot within 150 yards of an occupied building, one must have written permission...disbelief) This home was unoccupied at that particular moment smile

OA,

Nothing like trigger time! I like the " lawn dart " term myself. Great to see you snowed in killers putting them on the ground. And I'm looking forward to a post of yours with a pic of BH with a mask on!

OA,

Nice report and pics!

Your blood splatter reminds me of a crime scene investigator TV show.

Keep after those black yard darts!

The father is a computer geek and does not spend any time with them. Got permission from there mother to let them all shoot a .22 cal. pistol in the backyard, they could take it or leave it. What they all like is horses so we all go riding in the spring and summer months. They are all good kids.

10 Gauge:

You've probably told us once or twice, but just for future reference, what 10 ga. pump (modern, currently available) would you recommend?

remember i shoot a SxS short 10 (2 7/8th inch) but the Browning pump will shoot the 3 1/2 in and the 2 7/8 inch shells,

i would look at that one with a 26 inch barrel.

Spring should now officially be here since season is closed!!!!!!

But I still haven't seen any numbers. Maybe they are still down south.

Ditto here. Just small groups and locals. Still looking at ugly snow piles but not for much longer.

The heavy snows this year I am sure slowed down the spring return....thanks for the confirmation Ten gauge...the Concord corridor had them around in large numbers too a couple days ago..a friend spotted a hundred on the ground where I've never seen any before.....

....and 34 crows is nothing to sneeze at...means you saw quite a few to shoot at that many-this is New Hampshire /New England after all...plenty at times to keep our gun barrels hot! Do you and NH shoot he same exact ten gauge rounds? many a day in the past i wish i had one..
