Got a call from OA recently. He invited me to join him on a crow hunt this past Saturday. I gladly accepted. Its quite an honor to share a blind with a gentleman who served our country for so many years and also, I might add, is quite an accomplished competition rifle shooter. Impressive to say the least.
His invitation only had one requirement: "Bring a blindfold."
It seems my own paranoia has come full circle. It is now I who must be blinded. I searched the house for something to satisfy OA's requirements. Here is what I found:
I had to cut out some duct tape to cover the eyes to fully satisfy OA's blinding requirements. When the mask blinding modification was complete I tried it on and showed my 5 year old daughter. She almost started to cry because it was "too creepy." Seriously. Making a 5 year old girl nearly cry assured me that my location hindering device was complete.
What I did not realize is that there would also be a frisking, wanding, and baggage search before and after the hunt to ensure there were no electronic tracking devises imported to the area.
Spread' em! says OA.
I had fun hunting with OA. We used his blind and it was more simple to put together than I had imagined. Quite roomy too.
Here is OA at the ready while watching a bird on the approach. Picture two is OA in action, taking aim at an intruder.

The property we hunted was quite unique and added some good flavor to the hunt. It was the type of property I would have assumed is off limits to hunting. Clearly, OA's power of persuasion is robust. My hat (or should I say mask) is off to him for obtaining permission on such a neat piece of ground.
More random shots: Fun fact for the day, its hard to shoot with something covering your eyes.
I forgot to take a shot of our set up. Too bad. The set up was pretty neat complete with 2 hot stick sentries behind the blind.
Ok, one more parting shot. I was driving home and something caught my eye. Does anyone else see something wrong with this mailbox set up? Maybe its just me. Let me know.
That is all for now. Hope everyone enjoys the hunt as much as myself and OA did.
You think that mail box post is trying to say something to you.........
Nice pics, and OA must be a tuff customer to make you wear that through out the hunt.............did he let you shoot at any flying crows, or just the dead ones ????
At some point in your life, your kids' advice will hold more water but I enjoyed the outrageous mask.
As to your query about the mail box, the only feeling I have, and that's based on a prior lifetime, is that the shape of the 'shield' tends to optimize the aiming point, of what object, I can only guess.
That mail box "shield".... Reminds me of some boys I went to high school with.. The week end fun was to load up the bed of a pick up truck bed with rocks, cement blocks and other materials to hurl at mail boxes while in motion from the bed... It was all good fun until one land owner had had enough.. And the Fed's staked out a frequently smashed box.... Well.. didn't turn out too well for those guys...
BH---PUT IN SOME EARPLUGS!! 15 years down the road you are going to end up like me and realize too many years of shooting without them was a bad idea.
Did you guys kill any birds? I hunted 11-13th and said I was done for the year unless they migrated back thru. My crow hunting desire must be winding down cuz I just can't get excited to be chasing them around for 15-20 bird hunts. Of course I decided to try one more time this weekend but I could count the total birds spotted on one hand. I'm gonna call it a wrap unless something big changes.
Well played for you and Craig! Excellent story and supporting photo's. Craig's blind looks great, too. Like the "Bat Signal" I have always wondered if we could project holographic crows to act as lifelike, moving as decoys around stand if that would be effective.
Please note our friends at Boondock Outdoors have a new decoy - the "Flap-n-Flocker" that simulates a wounded crow on the ground, when connected to a FoxPro FoxJack decoy. That excellent product name reminded me of your mailbox shield!
