Calling Strategy

So I went out around 9am saturday as it was raining at daybreak and the forecast said the rain would subside.  There was a decent fog out so I  figured the high flyers would have to come down.  By the time I got set up th fog had burned off and the rain started in again slow at first, I called about 10 to 12 in but my set up was a bit wrong.  I should have stayed in the tree line instead of out in the grape rows as they circled into the wind and kind of hovered over the woodline instead of in the open like I hoped.   I had some shooting but didn't connect.  My question is how do you guys start out calling on each stand?  Do you do a mouth call or single crow call first then as more begin to come in start the crow fight sounds and the mourning calls and that after the shots?  Or do you pour it on right away.  What's a typical calling strategy???  After another set and high flyers I gave up and checked my game cameras and got out of there because it started to rain hard.

For me i call when i hear crows after I set up..there are many variables..one fellow i know stuck a plastic owl decoy on a pole with an attached crowbuster 2...others just stuff the decoys into the ground via stakes...some like to stick them in trees..two attached with a string  to hang them and let the win d do what it may..the bottom line is whatever you use, make sure your decoys don't shine and you got to be where the crows are!

Ok now you got crows...does anyone else hunt them there? If they stay up high this could be why! People think because they got 500 crows in a field that they are going to have  a great shoot. let me tell you not necessarily so! I had a lot fo crows but soon as they  saw us they all got up as one and never returned for the day! Give them a minimum of 3 weeks before you go again there...and try a different set up. I always use a different one myself. Everyone uses the ole' half dozen crows on the ground idea or more..if you must use more then do so by the way. They also use the same old calls in their callers...mouth calls? I use those. Every one uses electronic calls and the crows know them well in over hunted areas.

You also need to stay hidden...if you are more into the open then you need to cover your hands and face and use camouflage that blends in ..and hide anything that doesn't look natural too in your blind...I've seen guys using green camouflage when everything else was that dull grass yellow-no crows? gee-what a "mystery"!

Don't lead them as if duck hunting...under thirty yards the general rule is lead by a nose and if closer...keep swinging but shoot almost on them!

Good luck!

An owl or a hawk stuck up in a tree but necessarily too high with some calling will bring them in. Need a "victim"? Don't worry once you shoot one down you will..leave it where it falls unless it is too far out..I like to set them near the owl or hawk somehow, usually in an appearance of a dead bird caught by that owl or hawk..it works!
And for a "pole' i grab an old tree limb for better height and lean it against a tree or stick the pole in the forks of any tree limb. I tell you it works!

Doesn't have to be too high in a tree...Arm height is fine above your head. you can set them on the ground if you like too..but if you return, try to go to the other side of the field to try it again. On a fence is cool too...I like being between two fields in a hedge row or a patch of trees in the middle of a field..perfect blinds for me...but try to find an area where the crows are not being hunted at all if possible..I don't have that luxury here.

Crows coming over but too high up? Use larger shot or get a ten gauge...?

Vincent,

When I used to run & gun back east I either used a distress call or a fighting call right off the bat. I just used hand held calls but never set up out in the open, always found a spot with a large enough shooting hole (gap in the trees) in low trees. Never needed crow decoys as I would shoot the crows as soon as they cleared the trees.

Vincent: As a run and gunner myself, Bob A is exactly right: no decoys, hide well, use the calls he described...kill them when they get in range--repeat.
