Turns out that this was to be my last outing for the FEB-MAR MI season, so I went to a couple of favorite spots to see if I could whack a couple of “townies.” A bit cool this a.m., at 9 Deg. F, but had an extra layer on so not too bad with almost zero wind. First setup was just outside the City Limits (again, behind Wal-Mart in a friend’s backyard.) where three uneducated bandits visited, with two hitting the frozen ground hard! Clearly, they had not been to the local community college--off in the distant background. Then I want to another favorite spot at a friend’s land development that has a small lake, complete with swimming beach.
Used an assortment of calls. One “first-ever” happened at the lake, with Owl & Crow Fight (which begins with 7 spaced hoots followed by the crow racket). Turns out there was a real owl that hooted back at the Spitfire, from about 100 yards away in the woods. He attracted the crows’ attention and they raised a ruckus around him. Finally, some of them peeled off and came to visit me at the “beach.” Guess they couldn’t read--there was no Lifeguard there to save them except for my missing a few (except these four). Water was real cold—they look a bit “stiff.”
Nothing to do now except put equipment up and wait for turkey season to begin in three weeks!
Artilleryman, most near urban crows are dumb and need a good education. Great to see a devoted member doing his part! Thanks again for sharing your adventures!
