So, the corvids aren't flying to the felds around my area, so went todya to some of my fields that are further away (12-14 miles) and one of the fields there is getting hammered, so going to hit that in the morning, which means getting up at 03:00 again (then dress, breakfast, and load the wagon). It's a diffficult field to shoot, with houses on three sides, but just about managable. Already informed the farmers, but doubt the neighbours will be impressed LOL. But if townies will move into the countryside, they have to expect the odd bit of shooting and other activities that go with living in the countryside

Good luck tomorrow. I wish i could hunt crow this time of year. Since last fall its all i have wanted to do and i have done nothing for the last few months except work on designing some blinds to put up on our property and try new shells to see what i am gonna shoot next year. Just day dreaming till fall i guess.

I play a lot of pool during the off season, Buddy Hall (who was from Kentucky) was a very fine pool player.

Great to see somebody gettin after them, to hot and snakes,chiggers and ticks outnumber the crows here this time of year. Hope you have a great hunt!

Ended up with just 35+ and a maybe another 10-15 that had heart lung shot, who flew on to drop in another field.
Not a great day, but the very limited field of fire due to houses around the field put a damper on things. Had the houses not been there, it would have been a 100+ day easily

I know 35 ain't a 100 but that still is a good hunt in my opinion, especially with those limitations, Congrats!

Had another go at the same field today, and, that was a balls ache of a day, might just as well have stayed in bed LOL.
Get up at 04:00 instead of the normal 03:00 so I don't wake every one up around the shooting area by starting too soon.
Get to the field and setting up, whirlies out, hide built, only the rest of the deeks to put out.
Then I notice 6-8 cattle in the field, so I phone the farmer and tell him, and try to get them out.
What do they do ? They won't leave the field and end up tramping the cables of both whirlies !!
Ripped the cables out of the one, and seem to have broken the cable in the other, just hope they haven't shorted out the motors.
The farmer where I was came out to help, but even with two of us, they still wouldn't leave the field.
So I shut all the gates (in the meantime 2-4 had left somewhere, and I was left with 4), and set out the deeks.
While I was chasing the vows, 150-200 crows came over the shooting zone, and had I been there with all the deeks out and calling, I could have dropped loads.
As it was, they eventually gave up and flew on.
After that it started raining and I got soaked 3 times.
Hardly anything was flying after the big group, but I stuck it out till 10:30 when the farmer turned up with his brother and son, and between us we got the cattle out (turned out to be 4 heifers).
But at 11:00 it started raining yet again, so decide enough was enough, and packed up with just 4 hooded, 2 carrion, and 2 pigeon :(
There was another shooter busy 2 fields across (not my permission) and he seemed to be having slightly better luck than me (his crop was only just breaking through the surface) averaging 2 shots to each of mine, but again, nothing much moving.
So now I have to strip these whirlies, check if the motors are burned out, and replace the cables if they aren't :(
Not a very successful day at all. Hope they start on one of the nearer fields before the crops are too high to go on (once they get to 3-4 inch, you do permanent damage when walking on it, but below that it recovers no problem) Ohhh, and my thermos of coffee emptied itself in my bag too

Ray,

Here in the states (USA) I just take off my ball cap and wave it like a cowboy while yelling at the live stock, that runs them out of there in a hurry.

About 35 years ago I had a young calf get his rear leg tangled up in my speaker cord that ran from my blind to the tree the speaker was in. The calf bolted and away went the speaker bouncing down the pasture, the more the speaker bounced the more spooked the calf got! After that I learned to run off all the livestock and get them out of your immediate shooting area.

I got back, and tried repairing the whirlies. One I managed to repair, the other worked for five minutes and then packed up totally, motor shorted out :( so will have to get a new motor for that.
Then was just relaxing at home after feeding and playing with the dogs, when I got a text message saying another field was being hit hard after being sown yesterday. Went up and fired a shot to see what was on the field, and about 100 corvid and 100 pigeon took off. So went back home, and while the whirlies battery charged, had a cup of tea and a sandwich.
Then headed off to the new field to set up for the second time of the day
Got set up eventually at 17:00 and shot till 19:10 when nothing more came. Finished the field on 20 corvid (rook and hooded) and one pigeon, so will hit it again in the coming week, but early this time and hope for a good score, as they roost in the forest that backs on to it.
That made 29 for the day including the 8 from the morning, but that will be a good field to hit next week (not allowed to shoot birds on a Sunday here), but then start early in the morning as they roost in a forest adjoining the field

I got a crow complaint here....I will look into it..all it is  is just going out to find the offender and popping it...they will eat practically anything; I just cannot believe it even today.

I use two, both from A1 decoys (they both use windscreen wiper type motors)

One is a four arm heavy duty job that I've had four years (thought I had repaired it, but seems the motor has now finally totally gone)
So got to get a new motor for that.
And the other is a lightweight two armed on.
On the four arm one I have a speed controller with fully flocked and extended wing decoys, and on the lightweight I have two flocked spinning week decoys :)

They work best if they are about 10-20 metres to the side or rear of the decoy pattern, as if they are circling prior to landing. I then usually have floaters/bouncers between them and the decoy pattern, as if they have finished circling and are going in to land :)

Building a pigeon/crow magnet /whirlie yourself is very easy, and most parts can be gotten from the scrap yard for very little money.
All you need apart from a windscreen wiper motor, is a soldering iron, some solder, some bolts and screws, a welder, some cable, and two crocodile clips, plus a battery for when it's finished
Then bend the metal or cut and weld the bits as required. Here I find it just as cheap to buy them and let someone else do the hard work (except for repairing once bought)

Looks very do-able and fairly sturdy. This also beats paying a bunch of dollars for a commercial rig.

There are plenty of nearby auto wrecking yards and I'm fortunate to have a friend that owns a metal shop, So I think I might try this out. I need something to do to prep for our 1 August crow season opening and this would keep me busy. When you get the time, please show us a couple of photos of what you use for crow decoys with spread out wings--all of mine are sitters (wings "folded") or silhouettes.

The basic decoy is a sitting/standing decoy body (flocked) which for the basic flyer you cut two slots in the sides (one each side). Then out of black plastic (which needs spraying matt black) or black neoprene, you cut out two wing shapes, one left, one right, and slot them into the slots. I run a flat strip of metal through the two slots and under each wing about half way, and screw the wings to that, stops them flying out when it's windy or you use them on the rotary. The other type I use on the other rotary, is spinning wing decoys, which you can either buy complete, or just buy the wing set and fit them to a full bodied flocked one again. That type just requires a hole each side for the rod to spin :)

On the whirlies and floaters/bouncers, we also use shot birds, but you have to put them on while still warm, or you end up having to break the wings and neck to get them into position with wings outstretched and head forward looking down.
Again, a cradle to do that is easy to make or buy, and is basically a "tripod" with a long spike in the centre (gets pushed up through the birds anus, and through the neck into its brain cavity), and the two outer arms (best to make them swivelling but lockable) have "crocodile clips" on the outer Which click onto the forward feathers just past the outer knuckle of the wing.
There are many videos on YouTube UK, showing you how pigeons and crows fit on to the cradles. Both fit exactly the same
