Did a little scouting over a week ago and had found a farm holding a lot of crows. This farm takes in all the old and rotten fruits and vegetables from the surrounding grocery chains and use it as feed so the crows have been gathering there by the hundreds. Got set up in the morning near where they had been hanging around but once the action started the crows were a no show. Turns out their arrival at the field is usually sporadic at best and today wasn't their day. Through out the morning I did watch flock upon flock of pigeons landing and circling the adjacent pasture and I made the decision to come back the next day with a different set of decoys and chase a different quarry. The results were more than I had expected!
I had to set up facing the east on this hunt and had the sun in my eyes the whole morning. The camera lens doesn't like that much light and the image is a bit saturated at times but still turned out to be decent. Will definitely headed back out soon to give it a try again as goose season opens next month and I can't think of a better way to practice my form!

Saving duck and turkey nests bustin' crows one at a time!
I have gone into an area where there were a lot of crows the other day, say, and showed up and only saw a few crows flapping about...they took off-no crows and I figured oh hell, I am here, may as well stay...and what a surprise! where did all the crows come from?!??!
I often use a double decoy pattern, set the pigeon decoys out first (horseshoe, L or 7 pattern) with a pigeon magnet/whirlie or two, and a flapper, and then off to the other side a corvid/crow set up, again, with a magnet/whirlie and flapper. The apex of the horshoe, L, or 7 (I.e. The point where it's closed or bent) should be INTO the wind, as that's where the birds like to land, in the middle with a safe feeling of being amongst friends. Always have the pigeon decoy set up DOWNWIND of the crow setup, as pigeons don't like to fly over crows or even their own kind, but crows will fly over pigeons

When i go I use a different set up-I knew others had been there before me and I guarantee you they use the standard decoys idea....and I make it look different using different decoys they never seen before in a scenario likely not often seen as well...and it works!!
I do this if I return another day as well...and it's a tight fit where i go or used to as there isn't enough crows there to justify my being there! While I can go any time i want there really isn't enough for three men in this case...so I am looking elsewhere!
