Pick up dead birds when slow?

Do you all let the dead birds lay out there? Are there any benefits to leaving them out? Are there any benefits to picking them up?

For starters you don't want any dead birds a couple hundred yards away as that will be the bird the incoming crows will circle over while  crowing up an outrage or two....I was surprised that Bob left them out but it works! Ironically when I have run out the crows still CAME in right at ME with very predictable results!biggrin

Don't pick them up without a loaded gun!

Dick Mermon  who wrote "Crow Shooting Secrets" advises to pick up any dead ones...and especially any runners  headed for the hills as incoming crows always go see that one! I d found it isn't necessary to pick up any downed crows  in front of your blind..I've watched enough videos to tell you  it is quite alright and advantageous to leave them there but right close to YOUR blind..so go grab any gliders 150 yards out and so forth!

I pick up my birds when it's slow. I always hang a few in the brush underneath my decoys. But I always do the fighting set up. I'm not sure you would get the same results on a feeding set up?

Here, because they are shot 365 days a year, ANY birds on their backs or sides, or not looking natural scares others away. HOWEVER, that said, Sod's law (Murphy's law) dictates that as soon as you move out of the hide without the gun to clean up the pattern, 20-30 birds WILL appear over your decoys :(
Happens Ohhh so many times LOL

A fighting set up is always more "realistic

'"when you got all these crows laying on their backs..

Lol glad you methinks Murphys law. I have actually taken birds just waking back to the truck out in the open. It was like they knew I was leaving and didn't have my gun out anymore. I quickly resolved that issue. Now my gun is ready when I leave the truck and until I get back to it

What do you do with the crows after you shoot them? Can you eat them? I am highly inexperienced...

Robert,

There are a hand full of guys that do eat them; I'm not one of them.

People in the UK sometimes eat the rooks, which were a delicacy in the Middle Ages. But not many, and NO, I'm not one of them.
I do however eat the woodpigeon, but not feral pigeon

I rarely pick up dead crows as they usually disappear into the cover. Pick up some for a photo or if hunting private land that is manicured such as a sod farm. One landowner requested I police the dead as he had bee hives on the property and was concerned that dead crows may attract bears which do damage to hives.

Tom,

You are such a bright pupil that you are now ready to start your own crow hunting chapter in the state of NH.

We might open up some scholarships for some aspiring young crow hunters in your fine state!

 Bob,

wisdowm comes with age, and unfortunately we are BOTH no longer as young as we once were :(

a lot of years means a lot of experiences, and experience equals intelligence (except for left winger democrats and muzzrats) ;)
