Sunday am hunt at the " meth lab "

did not make it out to hunt saturday but got out this morning....my partner bailed on me and as he had permission to hunt a new spot...i had to go to  back up spot called the " meth lab " ...

with the warm up and southern winds lately...a majority of the crows in the area have headed north...but those that were around were very social and decoyed perfectly giving me easy 10-20 yard shots...and by 10 am i had 10 out of 10 crows in the dirt....great way to spend a warm sunday morning...

back at it next weekend...

Hello Bayman,

It's always nice to get out.

From your photo I can see why getting permission to hunt could be a problem. What is the population of Long Island now? When I left in 1974 it was around one million residents, I will be sitting down when you tell me the new population figure.

Hi Bayman,

Good report and photos. Thanks for sharing.

I like the name of your location too. I have names for a few of my spots but none as edgy as "meth lab." lol.

Bayman, I just looked it up, Long Island has almost eight million people living there now! This does not include New York City! I bet rush hour is a real bitch!

Nice "crow crash site" pic. I like your photo style and set-up. Spring looks pretty crummy there; just like here--but, it's my favorite season, watching it turn green. Another reason to go hunting.

haha....there is a story behind why its called the meth lab...that abandoned trailer sits on  corn field we goose hunt....well the first season we hunted it while setting up in the morning someone in the houses on the hill called the local PD and reported " suspicious activity " near an abandoned trailer and the local pd and state troopers responded in force thinking it might be a meth lab operation....was not funny at the time being made to lay in the dirt at gun point but afterwards when we named it the " meth lab " it became amusing..

this is in orange county ny....roughly 75 miles north of NYC but one of the most expanding counties in the state....as its within an hour of the city....20 years ago that hill you see in the back ground was just 2 farm houses and farm buildings now they are 10 homes built there....safety wise were good....the houses all sit 1500 to 2000 feet from where set up....they may not enjoy us banging away but were within our legal rights...so game on... :D

rush hour is a nightmare....and the reason i am glad i work on the bay....it takes my one friend 2 1/2 hours twice a day to travel 20 miles from his home to his job in the city....

Bayman,

I honestly don't know how any one could take being on a tread mill (rat race) like that spending 2 1/2 hours each way to go to work. I bet if he looked into it he could get together with some other commuters that have to take that drive everyday and rent a chopper to fly them in to the city, just a thought if they can afford to take that route.

I lived about 25 miles from New York City on the North Shore around Port Washington. Had some wonderful duck memories on Manhassett Bay and Little Neck Bay back in the 1960's. By 1973 the duck hunting around there went to hell, the food that the Bluebills and Canvasbacks used to feed on went away and so did the waterfowl!

I take it that you are a commercial fisherman, clams, lobsters and perhaps crabs?

Here is a photo of an old Bayman from the North Shore, this was taken in 1963. His name was Tom Kaelin and I loved that old man, he taught me a lot when I was just a young pup.

bob...i am a jack of all trades....in the winter i am a clammer...in the spring and summer i own a wholesale bait business and i catch and sell live minows...and other frozen baits...then in the fall i set eel and crab traps...

same thing happened on the great south bay...the clams died and all the seed clam the blue bills used to feed on vanished...thus the birds skipped over long island and moved on to NJ and points south...the bay has improved and the clams and mussels are coming back so the blue bills are starting to show up more and more...no where near the numbers they once were....but still some 200-300 bird flocks around...as for the canvasback....shooting one on long island these days is like having a 400 crow day...we get lucky once and while and one or two shows up over the decoys...but you could never target them...

great photo but before my time...i was  born in 74' :)

Bayman,

I can remember rafts of thousands (3 to 4 thousand Bluebills) of ducks on Manhasset Bay before the feed went away.

I am glad things are starting to come back (clams & mussels) in regard to food for the ducks and people. I used to use smashed up mussels for chum when I used to fish for flounders. My old friends who I am still in contact with say the flounder fishing on the North Shore has been dead for many years!

That is a shame about the Canvasbacks, we used to get lots of them starting in mid December through the end of the duck season. The white paint sure stood out on the Canvasback decoys (the drakes) when you had them mixed in with Bluebill decoys.

What town on the South Shore are you from?

Yup, I took a digital photo of an 8x10 photo outside and a fly lit on the photo when I hit the shudder.

Those flies are so big I have to use 6's to kill them!

A beautiful semi-auto-the way bit ought to be....great hunting; I see you don't miss much. I bet you knocked the tar out of them too!(No pun intended)...It's great you can still hunt despite the buildings in the back ground.I used to hunt this pig farm where initially the crows were  just like pigeons. How could any one miss? There was so much shooting I couldn't believe it! All you needed to do was to stand amongst the  food bins and  what ever call you used was great. They didn't recognize  anyone as  a particular threat.

The reason being they were used to the workers walking amongst them practically so it wasn't a really big deal regarding camouflage. To be sure a return trip they behaved just like any other crow in the cornfield west of that area.

Things are pretty sad when cops can come running up out of the blue and shove guns down your throats just like that..no warrants nothing...no questions...just like New York, the Andrew Cuomo "paradise"!

I hunted in orange and Dutchess county. Was a pretty slow season due to no snow. We hunt a Organic mulch farm and it got really slow. Kinda picked up in the end of the season, but nothing like last year. Couldn't load the gun fast enough. Still fun to get out. Started counting the days till Sept. 1st
