It's never too early, and never enough time to prepare for the next hunting season! To prepare for the next season, I purchased a FoxPro Super Snow Crow Pro (SSCP). Even though I used it only one time for crows, I really, really like it! I missed the DE snow goose conservation season as the unit was on back order and I could not go for snows again once I got it. I plan on using the caller primarily for crows, then snow geese and when I find the time to experiment in predator hunting, coyotes. I am providing my own thoughts and observations for anyone interested in the caller.

First off, this is a pricey caller and I assume thus far, worth every penny. I purchased mine from Cabelas at full price, $799.00. I learned FoxPro does not discount their callers and therefore, it would be extremely rare to find one on sale. Nevertheless, I saved a some bucks by using $20 Cabelas discount card (get them almost weekly), $50 Cabelas gift cards, and $49.27 Cabelas bucks. I also had the order shipped to DE in order to avoid sales tax. All in all, $680.72, not bad, IMHO. The complete unit consists of FoxPro's TX1000 remote, two, wired 30 watt speakers and a power pack.

The TX1000 remote has a nice big display and adjustable brightness, powered by three AA batteries. There are lots of buttons to provide generally easy access to all the functions and features of the remote. I have yet to discover the full capabilities of the remote and the caller. Menu navigation is relatively easy and do not get deep to navigate from sounds to settings and back to sounds. Lots of preset options and many FoxPro configuration settings. Check them out on the web site for more details. I am still learning and plan on lots of reading in preparation to the next season.

The SSCP speakers are larger than I imagined, two 30 watt, cone speakers. If you see FoxPro speakers in the store with other models, those are typically the small ones. The SSCP speakers are light and can be carried conveniently by the brackets. These speakers are loud and the loudness comes through clear and undistorted. Battery life is affected by the volume used during the hunt. A table is provided on the FoxPro web site listing typical battery duration in respect to volume levels. Optionally, you can purchase two additional speakers to connect to the unit to run a total of four.

The SSCP power pack is a rugged, water resistant, hard-shell container; comparable to a Pelican Case. The power pack contains two 12V gel batteries. Inside connections are charger, USB - for programming, and AUX plug for anything you may want to power, like motion decoys. The outside has the four weather resistant speaker connections. The weight of the power pack is approximately 13 lbs and is easy to carry by the wide hinged handle.

The SSCP comes with 100 miscellaneous sounds, predator, wild life and various bird and rodent species. I purchased the Bob Aronsohn 10-Pack Crow Sounds from FoxPro website and installed them within 15 minutes. I also downloaded 35 free sounds from FoxPro. The unit is easy to program from the USB connection and a PC. I did have to download a free FoxPro programmer interface program to navigate and organize the new sounds onto the caller. The sound formats are versatile and can handle MP3 formats. FoxPro sounds are a proprietary format and can not be transferred to other call makers (copyright and what nots). A couple of years ago, I digitized my I own Johnny Stewart Crow Calling Vol. 1 & 2 Cassettes. Using my laptop and sound editing software, I converted these sets to MP3 format. I was able to added these sounds sets onto the caller with ease. I still have room for another 850 sounds. Yeah, can not imagine filling up this caller!

In summary, this should be the last caller I will ever purchase. The caller has a lot of flexibility in adding more purchased sounds, or your own custom made sounds. I am searching for a field bag or back pack to ease the portability of the unit. It is not too heavy for one to manage, though carrying with a back pack would free my hands for the decoys, hanging pole and bucket. I really do like the unit and look forward to posting some good stories and videos of the unit in use in the field.

John,

You have a dandy of a unit, if I may suggest you can camo the speakers with just about any earth tone color paint. Here is a photo (a close up) of how they blend in once they have camo on them.

Awesome looking unit. Great for shooting from a blind flyway and such. A bit cumbersome I would think for Run and Gun style hunting thoughhmm. The SSCP makes my FX3 look like a Volkswagon in a Ferrari dealershipbiggrin. Enjoy your new caller and be sure to post commentary and pics of future hunts!

Yeah that is a really nice one. I have the crossfire with an external speaker for blind hunting. I also got the foxjack attachment with a crow wing from boondocker outdoors for my run and gun. Not a big fan of that though......mostly because i have more to learn about the set up for that.

Hi John,

Good move on the SSCP!  I love mine and all of that clear volume will pull in crows more effectively than less powerful models in the experience of the Texas Crow Patrol.  I agree with Bob A. on camoing the speakers.  I am going to order some Mossy Oak camo rolls to cover mine.  http://www.mossyoakgraphics.com/mossy-oak-matte-camo-roll

I think a King Tiger Tank to the Volkswagen is a better analogy! It's all about amperage.  How are your M12's serving you?
Some of the TCP visited the World's Largest Gun in Tulsa a couple of weeks ago.  Lots of fine vintage Winchesters on display
and for sale.  I thought of you.

Maybe take the speaker apart and hydrodip it. If you don't feel comfortable doing it get ahold of me, I got a guy that has the full setup.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I will work on the camo, definitely. Do you think the FoxPro speaker covers are worth the expense? I think they'll add more protection from the bumps of carrying them in the field than actual concealment cover.

Gerald, I like the idea of the hydrodiping, a smooth, seamless cover. Can you provide more info for me?

More info along the lines of doing it yourself or having it done. It's a pretty simple process and actually very cheap to do.

Dont be afraid to spray paint the speakers something like Bob did above.

Seems weird to spray paint something so expensive but that is exactly what I did and I would do it again.

Although, you'll probably want to use the unit a time or two just to make sure you are satisfied with it before painting it.

I used former crowbuster member PuppyPopper's method. I gave the speakers a solid, light earth-tone base coat first. Then, I used some pine branches and sprayed thru the needles to create a pattern. Keep overlapping the pattern with 2 or 3 different colors of brown until satisfied.
