Extendable Blind Poles
Permalink

I am looking for a new way to set up my blinds. I have tried a few different things. So far my best results have been with electric fence poles that i can step into the ground but they are still short. Have you all ever used any kind of extendable poles that are stable and will allow a net to be hooked onto it easily? I have thought about buying an extra set of the fencing poles and cutting those then adding them to the ones i use now to get them 8-12 inches higher with some INSANELY good adhesives we have at work.

jacobhward,

We use 5 ft by 1 inch wood garden steaks from Lowe's and hammer them in, on a lot of our ground it can be like concrete and we use a battery drill with a 1 in auger bit which works great. Works well at about 4 1/2 ft and we brush with taller limbs as needed. May be something for you to check on they are lightweight and cheap to use and replace as they break, which sometimes happens if your in hard ground. That said in 4 yrs of use we've broke about 6. You do have to Camo them with paint. Hope this gives you an alternative.

If you haven't already, recommend you do a site search here for "blind" or "portable blind"--tons of discussion and photos, including what Butch just mentioned. Have fun!

yeah i did the search first. Saw some good stuff but looking for something more specific. I hunt a lot of public land and have to carry all my gear in so the issue is the poles themselves. I am trying to limit how much stuff i have to pack in since a lot of times i have to walk in up to a mile to get to a good spot. I like the idea of the wooden poles. Most of the time the ground is fairly soft here so that might work to get the extra height im looking for if i can figure out a way to put them in the ground without having to bring more stuff.

How about the hollow steel garden stakes that have the green vinyl covering them. They have a knobby surface for tying string and twist ties. Here's a photo of one I use for "crow poles." They come in smaller and larger sizes up to about 8'.

They're not super strong but will take light tapping into soft soil or like Butch said, pre-drill the hard stuff.

Like you we are always looking for less an lighter to carry in, we have 2 "Carts of Death" we utilize on the long hauls but thankfully no mile trips only a few hundred yards is our max. Maybe pre cut some small trees of no value and legal or pick up some stakes and hide close to your long distant spots, just a thought. Hope others chime in as I said were always looking for a better way.

I do like that idea. I will go to lowes and some other places and take a look at those this weekend. Thanks.

Jacobhwrd,

Think about extendable paint poles. Remove the handle and rig some sort of spike on the end to go into the ground.

They'll be plenty tall and pretty lightweight too.

FarmTek sells fiberglas rods in various diameters and lengths. Guys are buying 1/2"X20' and cutting them to length to use as diddy poles or stakes for marsh trapping.

I have taken a look at some extendable paiters poles. My only concern with that was the thickness of the pole and it breaking easily.

I have never seen the fiberglass rods in 20 feet pieces. I had actually just realized something at work today. In my gun case i have another spot they say is for another gun but it really would be a tight fit. That would be PERFECT for the fiberglass rods. They weigh almost nothing, I can choose the exact length i want, I can easily add stuff to hook my netting onto, and since i walk to the blind with my gun in the case already i wouldnt have to actually worry about carrying an extra item. Thank you. This is the solution i have been looking for.

Go by the local electric utility company and ask for any used anchor rods. These are generally 7'.I usually cut mine off to about 6'.They are 5/8" thick and have a screw in eyelet so a cord can attach your camo netting. These rods are a little heavy, but 6 is about all you need for a 3X8 blind.Been using these for about 30 years. They also make good tomato stakes.
