Just one decoy?

I like to travel light. IF I had only one decoy, would it make the most sense to get it up in a tree? Or is there really no such thing as only one crow all by himself. Thanks.

Stone age,

If you want to travel light, why don't you just leave your ammo behind? Yes, that is tongue-in-cheek, but it makes about as much sense.

One decoy won't do you much good, but it might get you started. Try the tree first as incoming crows can see it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

IMG_2516.JPGIMG_2992.JPGOne well place decoy above the surrounding trees and shrubs is far more effective than a dozen poorly placed deeks on the ground. Watch real crows and copy this behaviour. A lone "sentry" if you will is often what catches my attention from afar. Often many more suddenly appear feeding on the ground one field glasses are deployed. I have NEVER used more than 6 deeks and shoot my share of the crows. Below a couple pics of my typical setup...

Get a pack of FUD decoys (NRA decoys) they work well, and pack flat

If you want to travel light I would recommend the "boondocker flocker" decoy. They aren't the best decoys out but they are 3/4 decoys that stack on top of each other. They are FFD and I have had good luck using them myself but I carry more stuff now and set up 7-30 decoys depending on my sets So I use all full body

Stone-age,

I agree with Ted's statement of 1 well placed decoy is better than 12 poorly placed decoys. I have no doubt you can kill birds with one decoy and a caller. Sure, it is more traditional to use more decoys, however, in the need to travel light masses of decoys would be one of the first things I would leave in the truck.

If you are hunting run 'n gun style then no decoys are needed, IMO. Others may disagree.

Looking forward to the reports.

Those things look awesome. It seems they are not available anyplace remotely local. But I will definitely find someplace to order some. Please make a suggestion if you know of a good place in the US, thanks.

That's a great looking set up. I see why getting the decoy up so high is important. The trees around here are all a lot taller, I'll see if I can think of some way to make the idea workable.  Maybe I can put the decoy on top of a small tree in the middle of a small field or something like that. I'd have a hard time getting a decoy up above a 30 yard tall sycamore or poplar or pine.

This may be a silly question but I dont care. How do you get the decoys so high up in the trees? And how do you get them done when you are done hunting?

The long answer is that you use the Search feature of this forum. It's an awesome resource for the serious crow hunter.

The short answer?

http://crowbusters.activeboard.com/t44189495/3-pics-on-marvs-sentry-hanging/

http://crowbusters.activeboard.com/t37021631/kite-pole/

If you are on a budget or short on time and have a roof rack, you can cut a suitable stalk of bamboo and easily go to 20-25' high, although not telescoping will make it a little harder to get it vertical.

This should get you started. Hope this helps.

^What I have been doing to get mine high up is I throw a rock with a string on it up over a branch of a dead tree. My plastic decoy has a ring on the back for this purpose. Pull the decoy up into the tree to where it looks like it is sitting on a branch, tie off the string. Lower it when done. I like this because the string is easier to carry than a long stick. But where I am I can also cut down a small tree and tie the decoy to the top branches then raise it up and secure it.

If your able to cut a 15-20 feet tree this in my opinion is the quickest and safest method of getting a few deeks up in plain sight...

To improve accuracy and height, a fishing spinning rod can get the job done as well. I've used one to get them up high in trees but they work best on nearby power lines.

Wouldn't be possible here in NI, the power lines are open and carry 30,000 volts at the very minimum

try that and you would leave a small area of scorched earth where you had been
