New crow blind idea

My friend Brian and I are going back to the field we killed 188 in last year. Last year it was peanuts and this year it is corn. The farmer said the crows have it covered up.

Last year we set up in a china berry island of trees in the southern end of the middle of the field. The birds came in good obviously but they were a little spooky. They would drop down on the mat all the way across the field and then pitch back up 100 or so yards out.

My idea this time is we are going to get in the northern middle of the field and dig pits. Basically, a hole for our legs and slightly recessed for our bodies. I hate laying down like a goose layout blind. I want to be able to shoot sitting or standing. The ground is soft so it should be hard to dig a small hole. If the birds act the same they will come real low across the open field.

Has anyone tried this before? I have watched crows many times sitting in large open fields and they seem to come in much lower almost right on the ground. I am still going to take my burlap camo to add some cover but only a couple feet up. I want it to look as natural as possible.

If it works, I will dang sure take pictures.

Well, I won't be trying that method again. Not because of the effectiveness, but because of the pain in the butt trying to dig the holes. LOL

We set up on the same field as last year. Last year it was peanuts. This year it was corn. I never have time to scout my locations. I rely on the farmers to tell me where the birds are. I got burned this time. The birds were about a mile away on a peanut field. We killed 32.

I would really like to try this again on a food feeding location but I won't do it without a backhoe! LOL

Barry,

Tried that deer Huntin in a 7 yr old pine plantation once, like you it is way to much work for this redneck. Backhoe is the way to go biggrin.  Also like you I depend on my farmers for scouting and they are spot on most of the time, one called last week and had a lot and called back 3 days later and told me all but about 20 had left. Saved me a long trip. Hoping Jan. will make up for this up and down year, we will see. Hope to get on some and maybe we can have that hunt together.

Butch
