Good start to Iowa's second season
Permalink

Iowa's season opened again last weekend. Got out Sat. Afternoon and tried a place I thought would have some birds passing through but only shot 3. Next morning on was one of my river spots and rolled 34 of them. Then got out this morning and busted another 35. Did get one triple and a couple doubles. Popping out of a layout blind and getting on multiple birds can be a little tough. Took a quick shot of the set-up before I tore it down. Definitely enjoying the new year.

Sounds like you're off to a great start.
Wapsi river bottoms hunt?
I grew up in Waterloo and the family farm was over in Buchanan County.
As effective as they are, I hate layout blinds and it will take an extreme situation for me to ever crawl into one again.

One hunt was Cedar by Gilbertville  and the second was in Waterloo, Hunted Waterloo again this morning about 3 miles from yesterdays spot was slower but still knocked another 30. Dealing with a lot of fog so when they appear they're already almost in range.

Hi Wingsetter,

Fine photo's and excellent results.  I really liked your decoy setup.  I bet that really pulled'em in close.

Regards,

Back to Fridays spot , Normally don't hunt the same place twice in a weekend, but with the fog so heavy the last couple days figured a lot of the birds didn't get a good look. They were definitely higher today and had to wait them out to see if some would drop in. And quite a few did venture in for a close look.

He loves it, My last Lab wouldn't touch them. He's pretty cagy to the way he flips the cripples on they're belly so they can't reach around and pinch him.

Classiest crow decoy set up I ever saw. This is what I like top see....another fellow in Taxachussettes uses the general same idea and you can be sure he gets the birds!

I don't think thirty birds is "small"..not at all! I bet there is the potential for more! You haven't found it yet. Iowa is no  small crow hunt area- Keep looking!

Jim,

That is a very nice trailer, are you a goose guide in Iowa?

Many years ago I used to hunt crows in Iowa near Newton. I had a photo op similar to yours with the dead crows on the hood. The blood stains never came out of the paint job on the hood of the pickup from those crows!

Good luck on future crow hunts.

Well not a guide , but I do take a lot of different people out, Try to keep my groups very small 2 or 3 getting 6-9 geese is a great hunt,  Take 5 to 7 and not so good then.  Late in the year it's hard to conceal very many to.

And this old truck has had it's share of blood stains, Pic of couple of the kids I had out this fall. Refuse to get a new one because I would take it where I go know. YEE HAA!

It looks like you hit a soft spot and wend down and possibly high centered.

The first photo was very nice with the young hunters.

Oh yeah I was hung pretty good, fortunately I have friends with toys to and had a F350 with a 12000 LB winch walk me right outta there. It was funny though as we getting unstuck the geese were dropping in the spread like 100 yds away. We finished up great that day to, even with the excitement!

I follow you, this is why my partner and I travel in two different four wheel drive pickups. If one gets stuck, the other pulls him out!

Wingsetter,

Shot in the dark here...

You know a taxidermist from Waterloo by the name of Doug?

It almost looks like him in that last photo but cannot really tell.

Sure do, he mounted a couple of hutchies a couple years ago for me. First met him when I was out scouting, we do a couple hunts a year together now. He's one of those guys that has an open schedule usually during the week.

Hey Wingsetter is your dog a just all around retriever or is was he trained for crows also? I assume you do some waterfowl hunting but he's also in the crow pictures I've thought about it since I started crow hunting maybe getting a dog cause I hunt so much creek areas.

Good to see another Iowa guy getting after em on here. I'm like you Jim, don't hit em too hard until waterfowl season is over. My boys used to wrestle at Jesup. Was always surprised to see how many geese were wintering in that Waterloo area when we would drive through there.

Buck a good story in himself, I've been really fortunate when it comes to attaining good field dogs. This is Bucks story, I belong to an archery club that works with Retrieving Freedom at raising donations which are mainly used to train dogs for PTSD veterans. Anyway as we were doing one of the fund raisers I was talking with the Rep. about my present dog getting ready to Retire. He looked straight at me and said your a veteran aren't you, and of course I said yes (12yrs USMC). He said we get dogs donated also from trainers that don't believe a dog is going to be a field champion but would still make a hunter a great dog and had two available right now. That's how I ended up with Buck. He was slightly over a year old and high intensity. Been fortunate to have him!  I hunt him 7 months outta the year.. Some of his work...And I always have fun with a dog along!

Nice kills and nice job to the dog too. Yeah I can't really say I "need" a retriever but it would be nice and it's nice to have a companion along on those long all day hunts.

Wingsetter,

Wow, small world.

You tell 'ole Peters that Big Honkers says hello. Doug and I were both members of waterfowler.com years ago when it was still popular.

I shipped him a nice drake mallard/black duck cross to mount. It is on the wall behind me as I am typing this.

Keep the reports come'n!

A lot birds moving this morning, I just couldn't catch up to a lot them, they were on like on a roller coaster. Very few gliders mostly dive bombers. Still shot over 30 barely, I supported the Ammunition Mfg this morning though. Debating on tomorrow, cold again here so I can drive about anywhere.

Still getting them to work, nice set-up today and they worked in pretty good broke the 40 barrier for this season finally. Buck had a blast although he was a mess, he had blood all down his neck and chest. Let good times roll as they say it.

Oh by the way was texting Doug earlier and he says Hi! to you to. Took him a couple minutes to recollect who you were, He asked if you were from Michigan and an old Waterfowler connection! So he had a good idea!

Jim (Wingsetter) ,

If you look at the photos of the blind you can see right thru it where you are day lighted and the birds can spot your movement much easier. It would be very easy to keep the camo more dense on the back side of the blind so this does not happen. I put a canvas tarp across the back side of my two man blind to keep it nice and dark inside so you don't get day lighted; plus it's a great wind break. I think this would help you kill more crows in my opinion.

Agee, where I step yesterday I put both thin strips behind to try and shadow us more, but Another layer of netting is needed. Rogers still has it on clearance I believe. I like the netting it's light and easy to work with.

Pre Superbowl hunt went well, got in a nice hunt before the game. Overall birds worked in pretty good. Layout blinds usually conceal us the best.

Jim,

Here is a shot of the back side of my blind. Even with out the brush you could not see through the netting because of the tarp on the back side of the blind.

Do you use a T post or something driven into the ground for corner structure?

Not sure how froze the ground is there, I use a 20V drill with a masonry bit to get into the frozen ground just for the ground decoys, Obviously you'd need some type of structure to wrap.

Lefty & Jim,

I welded up a frame 43 years ago and covered it with jute netting; the type they used in WW2 to hide the gun emplacements. Three sections are hinged together where it is almost like a horse shoe type of shape. Then the back rests up against it. The dimensions are 6 feet long, four feet deep and 4 1/2 feet high.

Warm front moving in this weekend, which shouldn't hurt hunting to much. Got out for a little while this morning while everything was still froze, Quite a bit of wind today which slowed the birds up a little from flying off the roost. Gotta go by more shells again which is a good thing!

On a frosty, windy Iowa morning, I'm thinking it might be hard to throw the cover off of a layout crow blind unless there are at least three birds over you!

Well I handle the cold pretty well , got a couple fingers though that have been frostbitten over the years and they feel a lot colder then they really are. Picking up decoys in icy water will do that to ya. My crow decoys don't fair to well though in the freezing temps, at least the flambeau ones, plastic gets pretty brittle and falling out of trees can break'm pretty easy. Set-up some of the G & H's for tomorrow and pitched the broke ones.

Thanks , hope to keep it going. Had a nice hunt Sat. morning. Got one of my younger hunting partners out for the first time this year and we did pretty good. I like hunting with this young man, he has a good understanding of enjoying the hunt so we take turns and back each other up really well, so it is recommend don't miss your first shot when your up to bat!!. We can sense when one of us is in a bad position to make a shot so the other has to which makes it so much more fun, some ribbing of each other will definitely occur. Anyway got a call from another friend I'm Snow goose hunting with in a couple weeks invited me up to Fayette County to try and wreck some of his birds, so Friday we're on for Northern Iowa Crows!

Didn't tear anything up this morning, Friends spot wasn't in the flyway, ended up with 7 birds. It was still fun we hadn't visited much lately and have a snow goose hunt coming up together, if they don't blast through to quick with this warm weather. Tomorrow should/could be better.??

Little better this morning, knocked 20 from the layout blind. They're definitely getting a little call shy, shot close to half with no calls at all. Fortunately I was set-up in a very visible spot. Little greasy getting outta the field with these warm temps won't be long and frost will be gone. There were lots of Snow Geese Migrating this morning, hopefully they're not jumping the gun a little.

Nice setup, when you say their getting call shy is it your fault or is there alot of crow hunters in your area?
