Any other Pa crow hunters here? I can't wait to go put the hammer down on some black bandits!

What are some tactics you guys like to use for summertime crow bustin'?

I can't wait to get back out after em'! In the summer or early fall I like to get back in the
woods and call, no dekes just calling, because they will come in under the canopy and land
in the tree tops to look down in to see what's going on and make for some easy shots.

Same here. I can't wait to get back out after some crows. I usually like to run and gun. I will start out about 1/2 mile from small roost area. Then when that slows down I like to get in the truck and make stops where I can and hopefully shoot a couple crows on each stop. It depends on the stop, but I may use a few decoys if I think the incoming crows will be able to see them.

Good luck!

Hey Jared! I won't start crow hunting until after summer, too much fishing to get done with the shorten NJ flounder season now.

Hopefully we can get together again and try the tree farm again. I know it will be better next time!

Good luck Friday!

John

I love seeing the crows bob & weave coming through the trees. Sometimes they come in silent and you don't expect them to be 10 ft. off the ground coming right toward you. Just don't be afraid to try to shoot through some of the leaves, because otherwise you won't get a shot if you wait for the openings. You will be suprised how many extra birds will fall if you take the shots through the leaves, because it doesn't take too many pellets to knock a crow down.

So do you just set up in the middle of the woods? I can't believe I haven't done that.

I have found some of the best spots are in small wood lots in between fields. It can't be too thick that the birds can't fly through it, so there has to be some mature trees. It seems like wet semi-swampy areas and creek bottoms are good places that come to mind.

What kind of call (what sound) do you use if you go into the woods to hunt?  Young crow?  Crow Distress??

Usually something excited like a young crow in distress or fighting call. It seems to get them to come through the trees looking for the commotion. I have found if you use just a come here call or single crow call they tend to take there time and fly a little higher to check out the area instead of coming through the canopy fast and furious.

I haven't done much early summer hunting under the tree canopy.  I will give it a try.  It would be a different experience to have them come down through the canopy.
