Quick pigeon shoot today
Permalink

JR. and I ran up to the old pigeon hole for a quick shoot today. I learned one thing, they do not fly well in the heat!!! It was in the 90's and sweltering. JR. went 17 for 26 and the old man went 10 for 12. Believe it or not I took Bob A's advice and shot the Federals from wally world. $20.97 for 100 rounds, They were 3 dram 1 1/8 ounce 7.5's 1200 fps and they shot really well. JR.'s new 870 did not like them at all though. Several times I had to slam the butt of the gun on the ground to get the hull to spit out. At least 6 times times I had to do that.cry My MAXUS spit them babies right out, it dont matter what I put in her she will throw em, stays hungry too!!! likes to be shot and Daddy likes to shoot herwink. I let JR do most of the shooting,,, we killed ten pigeons and the rest were starlings, cow birds and grackles..... I finally got a jellyhead for the MAXUS and it is so deadly that it just aint fairno. I dusted birds that JR wouldn't even raise up on with his mod. It is a 670 constriction and it will smoke em.biggrin!!!!!!

Hi Chip,

The 870 pumps don't like the cheap ammo with the steel heads. This is why I like the Beretta's, Benelli's and Brownings, all those autos shoot the cheap ammo with no problem.

Yea, that El Cheapo Federal load works pretty well I must say. The green hulls by Remington at WalMart are the old Gun Club Load.

Bob, will your Beretta's shoot 7/8 ounce loads ? Before I bought my Baikal, I guy let me shoot is SBE, it jammed on every 7/8 ounce load I put in it. Then I found out that Benelli's disclaimer is not to use anything less than 1 1/8 ounce loads in their guns.

The reason I ask is that I am trying to work a trade with a fellow for his 391 in 20ga.

I have 6 Benelli's and all 6 will shoot anything i jam in them. If i pay that kind of money for a gun then it better be able to handle the cheap stuff. cause that is all i can afford after purchusing the gun.

Mossberg 930 eats any thing and if you run out of shells you don't feel so bad using it as a club , boat oar, ect. I am kind of partial to the saftey on top. Also have a moss 500 that I use for turkey / fur bearer.

Hello Chuck,

What gauge, 20 or 12 ?

My model 391 shoots one ounce loads just fine ( 12 gauge ) I never tried a 7/8th's ounce load in the 12 gauge.

If you are talking about a 20 gauge Beretta I would think it would handle any 7/8th's ounce load without any problem.
