OK, It's HOT !!

But who cares ? Its the end of July and I have not had the time to get out sense February. Oh its time to go. Plus I needed to try out my new choke the girls got me for fathers day.

They got me a Kicks High Flyer.

So Saturday morning me and the fellows went out.

I had found a hole ( Jon would have approved of ). I only had a window of 10 and 2 to shoot out of.

Here is the view.

This was one of my late set up blind stands or what I call Dead Man Stands.  I pulled up and flopped every thing down , started calling , then waited. My hand calling sucks. After no response, I flipped the switch to the Foxpro and turned it wide open. Five minutes later one bird slid in from my 3 o'clock. 20' off of the ground and I did not shoot. I waited. Shocking I know. I waited to see if the scout would offer a better shot. He did. He died. #6 and the new choke does nasty things to birds that are 10' off of the ground and 30 yards out. We now call this " Black Rain ".  After the first one bit the dirt the others came in but they were up into the Extended Range section of the trees. I did not bring those shell. I just grabbed a hand full of the 7/8 and 1 1/8 loads. Another bird made the mistake of answering the distress of the FoxPro so I put about a foot and a half lead on him, just to watch him ball up. The sound of a falling crow hitting the ground after having the boom pole swung out on him is just a mornings delight. Thud, its a cools sound. I was only able to pull off two from this stand but oh well off to the next one.

The next stand was a bust I walled up onto this field but unknowing that it was covered in crows feeding in the tall grass. From where the picture was taken was where I got busted. It was so bad that I pulled back up into the tree line, turned the caller on and waited. I waited for nothing. Lesson learned, when you are busted, your butt is busted. Go home.

Well I did not go home I went and made another stand. Oh heat what heat, its just plan HOT. When I got to the next spot I knew that me and the fellows were going to part ways on this stand. It was just to hot and to long of a walk with them in tow to get to where I was going. So I talked Fred into going with me. The other guys asked if I would leave the truck running with the A/C turned on. So me and Fred made our way to a little field that backs up to the lake. He found himself a tree to sit in while I listened to the geese playing in the lake.

After getting settled in I turned on the caller and let it rip. The birds came in slow and dropped way below the tree line. Which I figured that they were going to stay high, so I accounted for that and made adjustments. I guess with Fred in the tree it gave them a false sense of security and made them drop in. And drop in they did. One within one step of me. Now I know how Jon feels when I drop them on him. Its cool when you feel the ground move from the thump. I was only able to call in five birds from this stand. Three of them , well lets just say, their dead now. It was a bang, boom, splat kind of thing.

Now understand one thing about me. I am all for honoring, giving and showing respect for each and every animal I harvest.  But look behind me in the next pic. Two of the three birds that I shoot went into the tall grass or what ever this stuff was. I just was not going in after them. Sorry.

All in all the hand calling sucked, the Baikal with the High Flyer Choke really reaches out there, the Fox Pro did its job , but Damn was it Hot.

Don't know if I agree with ya on the busted your busted I had a field last fall I think it was oats prolly had 50 + birds in it it was 9:00 am they were feeding in it I did not know how to get them. If I went down the road they may have come in to see what was up but I pulled out the brass cohonies and walked right threw the field at them. They flew over the trees and I stabbed a few decoys in the field fired up the fox pro and in an hour and half got 22 of them they just filtered back to the field 2-3 at a time.

Now when I see a flock I am pretty sure if I can make them fly out of sight not by shooting at them they will come back but if they see you setting up decoys I think you may have some trouble then but just thought I'd let you know don't lose hope when you walk up on a flock.

Other than that I feel like I was with ya on that hunt good coverage, nice pics too bad it was hot

I seem to have the same experinces in the heat that you do,the crows just dont care, they dont need as much food, and they just are not that rambunciuos.Thats why I am shootin chucks and pigeons right now. Fall everything changes,I have had crows decoying in while I was setting up my spread.smile

I think it has to do with what the birds are feeding on and how bad they want it. Also if the birds have been pressured alot they are much more apt to skedaddle. I always put my deeks out last. The only thing I have left to do is shoot after the deeks are out. I've never hunted the bandits in the heat. Never will as long as I live in Obama landcry  No doubt it would be a pain.

Good job on the summer time crows. I have had mixed results on crows that spot me when getting to my spot, and usually the crows win. Sometimes if I don't scare them a couple will come a little too close for a look, but I think they can recognize a guy in camo as danger.

Also, does your Baikal shotgun shoot 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" shells? I am pretty sure that is the same gun as the Remington SPR 453 that they import from Baikal. We raffled one off at this years crow shoot, and I don't think you can beat the gun for 1/3 of the price as the other top of the line semis. I am thinking of getting the same gun again for next year.

Good luck on your next outing.

Pacrowshoot, yes the Baikal 153 and the Remington 453 are the same gun. I paid $360's for mine at Dicks Sporting Goods. I absolutely love it. I give the guys with Benelli's a hard time. My joke is that you have $1500.00's to spend. What do you buy ? They buy a Benelli and that's all. I buy a Baikal, shells, calls, decoys, clothes, and what ever else I need to go hunting but they have a Benelli. OK. I really can't say anything though, I am finishing up a deal for a SBE. It will be a back up gun. I have to admit, with the adjustable recoil system you can beat it. For me it holds like an 1100, best auto-loading shotgun ever made, and shoots any thing just like a Benelli. For under $400.00's you can not beat it.
