Got out early today and went to some public ground, where I allways see crows. I've never hunted there, it's mostly set up for duck hunting, being low ground in the flood plain of the White River. I had one come by, which I promptly missed. After that I could see and hear birds in the distance, but none interested in coming to the call or decoy. The ground is planted in young trees about 8" tall, so I put one sentry decoy on a 20'+ tall piece of bamboo. The Great Blue Herons kept circling the decoy, but the crows weren't interested. There was a lot of coyote scat and tracks in the roads, but man it's thick and I'm not sure how to hunt it.

I'm going to try the crows again tomorrow morning. Monday, I used one lone sentry deke and they didn't like it. Tomorrow I'm going to try the owl with my winged crow under it, like the owl is holding the crow upside down.

I don't think my approach is the way to go. I never fired a shot this morning, and only had one within 200 yards. It's still hot here, 90+ degrees, and the wife thinks that's a lot of the problem. I think I just suck.

Yes Shane, I've got those calls on mine. They are not showing much interest in any calls that I have thrown at them. Maybe the heat is having an effect on them reponding. I'm going to try again tomorrow morning and maybe evening too.

Went this morning behind the house where I normally hunt. I used the old cassette caller with JS crow&owl fight and MA21 at the same time. I had more crows come in than ever, probably 30. For here that's a lot. After that, singles and doubles for a while. And I did NOT KILL a single crow. I feathered the last one I shot at, but not one kill. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I've been consistant this year. No where to go but up from here.

You have got them coming in are they close enough ? Are you able to hit a moving target with a shot gun? I am not trying to be smart but just trying to help figure out your troubles. Have you shot skeet trap or sporting clays? Using decoys ? If so explain set up. How are you hiding. And this might open up a can of worms but what choke and shot size. Even the number of decoys would possibly help how many do you have? If you can awnser all these ?? I am sure you will get lots of pointers to try.

O yeah I kant spel eether
JD they were plenty close, and I USED TO BE able to hit them. We don't have lots and lots of crows, so shooting 10 times per place per day is pretty good. Last year I shot pretty fair on crows, guessing 80% kills. I killed them with my 835, my sweet sixteen, and he wifes 20ga. This year all I've carried was the 16ga. It's an older fixed full choke, and I usually shoot good with it. Don't have any crow ammo for the 12ga so I may try the 20ga with a more open choke. I shoot 7 1/2s and 8s, but prefer 7 1/2s. I had 3 crow dekes hanging in trees and the owl on the ground with the other crow under it. They came in good enough, I just couldn't hit squat. HIZZONER, I don't have the disposable cash fora busterII right now soooo, I'm trying something different. I have a battery powered bat that flies in circles attatched to a string. I put a little clamp on it and fastened it on the bottom of my owl deke and it looks good flapping away like it's trying to get away. I'll try that next time, and maybe on a pole if needed. And guys, it's gonna take more than asking what I'm dooing wrong to upset me. I appreciate the interest and sugestions. I like crow hunting but am no expert at it.

Sometimes, it can just be a day that for no explanation just goes bad. I think sometimes if they are decoying in real well, they look easy and relax you too much. Just keep shooting and trying, it will all come together for you. Good luck and happy hunting.

whatever i'm doing i'm thinking about crow hunting
I have used those Halloween battery-powered toy bats in the past and they work fine. I suspect, like me, you will discover they won't last as many hunts as the more expensive Edge Expedite Wounded Woodpeckers or the Crowbuster Buster II variants. But they will work fine at locking in any in-bound crows.
Just hook your bat to a bare limb or something where the flapping action is clearly visible to airborne crows. Those Hummingbird Feeder "Hooks" sold by Tractor Supply Stores and others make good "flapping" decoy stands as noted by JimB of Alabama.
Watch em, I'll shoot my way out of the slump. Bob, I'll get a Buster when I can afford to. For now I'll use my toy. I also have a teradactyl and an airplane. They came with brackets to attatch to the ceiling with a line and hook that fastens to the toy. With 2 AA batteries they will fly in circles for about 6 hours. I have ran them for many hours in the living room. We used to have a store called The $5 Shop and they were $5 each. I thought they were neat because the bat and treadactyl actually flap their wings to fly'. I thought with the bat being black, it would be worth a try.

Its been a long time since a crow has seen a taridactle ( I know my spelling is way off on that one) paint the T bird black I am sure it would work the same. :)
