This will make you cry,I have a bunch of 24"x24"x 18"deep boxs of once shot Rem green and black hulls, and Win AA hulls,My favorites are the the Rem Gun clubs,And when I started loading the 20 gage I put out the word and now I have a crap load of hulls for that.I do have some Estates that I loaded for summer hunting (red )but I mainly pickup as many as I find.Up here me and my buddies have tons of hulls.smile

My load for crows 12 gage.
Hodgen Clays 13.5 grains,Claybuster Wad 7/8,Fiochi primers.

20 gage
Hodgen International Clays 14.5 grains,Clay Buster 1 1/8 wad, RemGun Club or STS hull.

TCP loads subsonics for the metro guns, but we buy standard loads. Its tough to save any money reloading a 1 1/8oz gun club style load.

Have you shot that load in the cold before?   I'm not a big fan of claybuster wads for keeping high pressures, but I've used mostly the pink ones that are 1 oz AA clones.  For cold weather I like the Fed 209A.  Admittedly, it doesn't really matter much except for gas guns.

Thanks WTF we need to get together and shoot em up.
Ful n fullr the fed209a is a hot primer
never had much trouble with what I load down to the - degrees that we sometimes get here.
It's not the savings but that's a bother story for later.

It's interesting that you mentioned winter loads. Something that has been overlooked is what cold weather can do to you're loads whether they be hand loads or factory loads. When you are out in very cold weather (in the teens or below) you're ammo won't have the same velocity as in warmer weather! This won't make much difference if the majority of you're shooting is 30 yards and under, but you notice it on the longer shots beyond 35 yards. The velocity is slower in colder weather!

JD if your planning to use Red Dot for 1 1/8th oz loads your pressures will be mighty high as it's a rather fast powder. Might make a good cold weather load though. Green Dot is a much better choice for handicap trap type loads IMO.

I used Du Pont 7625 in my 20 gauge for over 20 years, I could get on average 8 to 9 reloads per hull before they needed to be pitched. That was back when you could save money by reloading. I remember reloading all damn summer to get set for fall.

Spring, summer, winter, fall,

Federal gold metal
Clay buster wads
Win primers
Red dot
7 1/2 and 8's

Bob, years back when I shot trap and loaded constantly. I think we counted 12 or 13 times out of a hull.

Tried green dot had a lot of flaring in my face using it in a auto. After 50 rds or so I would get unburnt powder build up and after I would empty the gun when the action locks open I would get a flame that would be inches from my eye brow scared the crap outa me asked around at the club yup un burnt powder cause green dot tends to be "dirty" switched to red dot gonna use it till I run out and then prolly go with promo powder.

Unless you buy in major bulk or with a club you save about a penny a load. But toeach his own I like stuffing my own and busting crows or what ever you may be hunting with home rolled is a nice feeling. Now if you shoot odd gauges that the local sporting goods store wants a arm and leg for ammo or doesn't always carry it you can roll it way cheaper sometimes.

Also when I switch to winterloads I am gonna try this year is switching shot size to #6 just for the educated locals that don't like to come into #8 range.

I use the load I reload for skeet and sportingclays and hunting
it's a published load and it seams to work well.

Red and Green dot were manufactured by Hercules which was later bought out by Alliant I believe.

If your getting a lot of unburnt powder residue and the like then there is a good chance your pressures are not high enough for complete combustion.

Hercules powders never were the cleanest burning powders IMO. Actually Red, Green Dot and Herco were changed a bit to make them cleaner.

Right but they are available local and when you ask most reloaders that's why they use what they do or at least when they start out reloading. Or so it seams. I am sort of aiming at reloading on the cheap but efficent. Been messing around making my own shot. Comming close but still tinkering.

I usually switch to 71/2s or 6's and mod or imp.mod in winter if it is really cold and birds are sometimes higher. But sometimes in winter we have had birds come in almost oblivious to any thing. I try to adapt to every condition and use what gives me the best chance of smokin the crowsbiggrinpc.gif.
