Two for the record books!!!

I just had the best crow hunt of my life while hunting alone.

The first day I shot 375 crows on a morning flyway shoot. I had 361 down and was packing up when here come some more (it figures) I hand called the additional 14 crows which brought the total to 375.

The next day I shot 568 crows in a feeding area from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Then went out later that afternoon and killed an additional 143 crows on a flyway shoot from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a grand total of 711 crows for the day!  On the morning hunt I had 300 odd crows down in the first 1 hour and 40 minutes.  I used 895 shells that day, all 12 gauge.

I scouted the next day and found the largest flyway I've seen in more than 30 years! I followed them to there feeding grounds. I setup one mile east of where they were feeding so I could shoot the flyway plus get them feeding later after the flyway shoot was over. I started shooting at 7:20 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on the flyway shoot, I had a little over 600 birds down by 11:00 a.m. then shot birds trading around until about 3:00 p.m. and when they headed back to the roost I had a little over 700 crows down by that time. From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm I shot an additional 130 odd crows bringing the total for the day to 834 my largest shoot of my life! I used 1150 12 gauge shells for 834 crows.

I have a blind bag that holds 400 rounds of 12 gauge ammo, I shot that up, then took a short run to where I had a flat (250 rounds) stashed in the toolies near the outside of the blind. I shot all those shells up and ran for the pickup for more ammo. I drove the truck to the blind and dumped off 500 more rounds of ammo then took off like a wild man to get the truck out of there. By 5:00 p.m. I shot up all those shells as well. I haven't had a shoot like that in 26 years. Boyd Robeson & I shot 859 crows in 1982 and I came within 25 birds of breaking that record, but I have no complaints.

I scouted all day the next day.

The next day I shot 152 crows in a feeding area from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. I used 8 boxes of 12 gauge ammo. Then set out for an afternoon flyway shoot and shot 121 crows with a little over 6 boxes of 12 gauge ammo. The total for the day was 273 crows.

So in four days of actual hunting I shot 2,193 crows for an average of 548 crows per day! It will be a long time if ever I get a hunt like that again!

Hello Shaddart,

Both are Beretta model 391's. They take a licking and keep on ticking, great firearms in my opinion.

The photo with all the empty boxes in the blind was on the 834 bird day, one spot.

Hello Splash,

I didn't pick up any of the dead crows, the coyotes will make short work of all of them. I was in such a remote spot that the only thing I picked up were all the empty boxes and thats it.

So how have you, Matt and Gadget Bob been doing? I hope all is well with all of you fine fellas.

Holy cow! Congrats Bob a=on a terrific hunt. Did you run out of shells? I should be so lucky to get 1% of that many on my feeble attempts. Just amazing.

Hi Eric,

I didn't run out of shells, I just ran out of crows there at the tail end of my biggist shoot. I had more ammo in the bed of the pickup if they would have kept flying, but it was getting late in the afternoon and I was 9 miles out from the roost so they had it more in there minds to keep going rather than come give me a look by 5:00 p.m. that day.

You have to get the right breakes to get such shooting. The weather & wind are big factors, plus you have to know the birds habits and even then there is no guarantee you will have a good hunt.

I have bad hunts as well (beatings) during the season, but thats all part of the game. When it is right like those four hunts I just keep shooting because it's not that often that things are in you're favor and the crows respond like that.

Congratulations, looks to me from the empty ammo box pile that economics of such volume shooting dictates the use of value packs over AA and Remington STS. I am curious with so much shooting do you use any ear protection?

Shaddart,

Yes, I was using deks and a call. I used the Fox Pro on the 711 bird shoot and my old "Screaming Me Me" on the 834 bird shoot. I used the CS 24L unit by Fox Pro. It pays to have at least two sets of rechargeable batteries in AA's for this unit. If you run it under full volume and I did just that, you get four hours of battery life at that rate, more if you turn it off and on a lot during the day. The two 30 watt speakers produce very good volume. I'm having Fox Pro send me another plastic holder for the 10 AA batteries so when the first set runs out all I have to do is unplug the battery pack and make a quick switch with a fresh fully charged battery pack of 10 AA batteries. This saves time where you don't have to take out the dead batteries one at a time and put new ones in!

Hello NH,

WHATS THAT YOU SAY, LOL.

If I'm alone I don't use any, but if there is another shooter with me I just use cotton in both ears. I had 46 empty boxes of 12 gauge ammo piled up inside the blind at the end of the day, Ill remember those two shoots for the rest of my days. The 711 was two sets but the 834 was from one set, never moved, same spot all day. For the fellas who don't know what I'm talking about in regard to "sets" it's just short for setups is all.

Hello Gadget Bob,

Skip is indeed a very fine wing shot, he is quicker than I but I still get the job done lol. I doubt I will ever get another hunt like that in this lifetime! To average 548 birds a day is just sureal to me.

Have a good Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Bob A.

Hello Kevin,

A good shooting partner of mine who passed away in September said to me "that it's good work when you can get it" he was a damn good guy and I enjoyed his company in the crow blind.

I've had some very good shoots over the years but the two big ones of 711 and 834 I will never forget for as long as I live. I aught to quit while I'm ahead lol. I could never quit, I love the thrill of the chase to much.

Good talking with you Kevin.

JD 1983,

For the money the Federal and Remington Sport Load work just fine. I just use the 3 dram load in both with 1 1/8th ounces of shot. Both do 1200 fps, I suspect that the Remington Sport Load is the old Gun Club Load, they both shoot about the same on live birds.

Hello Doc,

I'm just glad I had a camera with me because the photo turned out better than I thought it would.

I had several empty box shell avalanches during the day. All you had to do was bump the bottom ones and a lot of them would all come crashing down lol.

Indeed it was a very special day to me, best day I ever had alone in all the years of hunting them.

Hi Matt,

When things are right the numbers add up quick. I've had 9 days afield so far this season and here are the totals in order. 105, 150, 380, 218, 79, 375, 711, 834, and 273. This has indeed been one heck of a season so far.

Tell Skip, Splash One, Texas Phil and Gadget Bob I send my regards.

How is you're season going?

Bob; I agree that the Remington sport load is the old gun club load. Been shooting them for a while in mainly 12 & 20 & I also don't see any difference. I think I even have some in 16. I hunt a lot solo to, don't mind, but it's definitely more fun going with a buddy or my boys.

No time to get lonely with those numbers coming at ya Bob! Good God! How do you sleep at nightbiggrin.

Crows are all done for me up here. Heard one the other day in town here...a reason to raise the eyebrows.

Working on putting my second buck in the freezer. Heavy snow now and expecting another blizzard to track north from the Dakotascry. Will be really snowed in then. Might have to settle for one whitetail this year as the season ends this weekendno.

Keep them falling Bobsmile

Hey Bob I've been having a slow year crow wise, but am mostly concetrating on getting my calls made. I stood behind my lathe for almost 11 hours today.... I have a fine assortment of wood calls to take to this weekends gun show... Pao Ferro, Cocobolo, Bocote, Oak, and Spalted Pecan...

Bob,

I would like to know a little more about how you chose your location to hunt. You said that you set up 1 mile east of where they were feeding.

Was the field 1 mile away from the feeding field directly under their route of travel?

Hi BH,

I was in a hedge row that they liked to follow when you had a SW breeze. After 4 hours all of them were already through my blind position, but hundreds of them paid the price on the flyway shoot. I had a tad over 600 crows down by 11:00 a.m. and from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. I shot mainly singles that would come into the setup. Then from about 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. I shot them going back towards the roost. With the wind in the SW they would fish hook into my setup since they were coming from the south and southwest.

I was directly under there route and the feed field was a mile west of my blind. It's a great when you get a hunt like that, it's been 26 or 28 years since I've had a shoot like that.

Hi John,

That was very kind of you to say. On shoots like that besides having lots of crows to work on you also need the right conditions, such as wind and wind direction, also a little luck as well! On the 834 bird shoot I had a little over 600 down during the flyway shoot alone. That flyway lasted for almost 4 hours, it reminded me of the old Hutchinson, Kansas days back in the late 1960's.

There were thousands of crows concentrated in this feeding area and thousands that were strung out on there way to this feeding area. I had a nice SW breeze of 10 to 20 mph and even though 600 birds sounds like a lot the shooting itself was kind of like this, in the amount of time it took to load my Beretta I wouldn't have to wait more than five seconds before there were targets within range.

The last shoot I had like that was 28 years ago with Boyd Robeson, so, they are indeed very rare!

Hello JaredinPA,

It took a while going down the list of fellas that wrote a reply to my post to answer all of you.

I've learned over the years you had better have enough ammo in the bed of the pickup to sink a battle ship! I've run out of ammo twice many years ago, but thats where you learn from you're mistakes.

Did you get the buck you were after this season? Do you hunt all three, rifle, bow and muzzle loader?

Have a safe season.

Bob,

Thanks for the wonderful report. I can't imagine having that many crows to shoot at in a day - we probably don't have that many in the county that I live in!

I just ordered your 3 DVD's from the CrowMart Store to try to learn how to do this better. I'm just getting back into the game after 15 years of other adventures.

Thanks again,

Dave

Ducks,

Thank you for the kind words.

I have to take it easy for the next week to 10 days, I slipped on the ice 7 days ago and broke one of my ribs. Dick is going to carry my heavy ammo bag until I get better. That will most likely be for the rest of the season.

Have a Happy Holiday.
