I saw my first fish crow today.

Today, during the 80 bird shoot described in my other post, a fish crow came over.  Unfortunately, he stayed very high, and we never got a shot.  He was making a very different sound than normal crows, so I suspected thats what he was.  When I got home, I googled fish crows, and confirmed the sounds we heard.  I've been hunting crows for 18 years, and this is the first time I've every encountered one.   Do you any of you guys see them often?  Do yall shoot many?

Here in Okla. we see them while fishing the bigger river systems in the summer. You are right they sound alot different, more just single caws and higher pitched. But they are still callable with a fighting call :)

Never even heard of a fish crow, what are they ? I've seen them picking up dead minnows on a river edge, but my guess is thats not what ur talking about.

Hi Matt,

Over at Fox Pro they have a photo section where Jerry Byroade is holding a common crow and a fish crow to show the difference in size.

Some of the areas that I hunt the fish crows roost right with the common crows. The fish crows are a little more leary than a common crow. Jerry Byroade had a pet fish crow for about 12 years before it died from old age.

Dick Kilbane and I had a mixed bag last season where out of the 140 odd crows shot between us about 1/3 of them were fish crows. The fish crows would come by just for a look, they wouldn't come in near as well as a common crow would have.

I went to visit a long time friend in South Carolina on John's Island a few years back and all they had were fish crows flying around all over the place.

If any of you fellas want to see the photo of the fish crow and common crow just click onto the blue letter head where it says Texas Crow Patrol; and when you come to the Home Page click onto Crow Shooting Legends. Then click onto Bob Aronsohn and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and look for "Photos" and click onto photos, this will take you right to the Fox Pro photo section. If you click onto "Most Viewed" it will put the photos in order.

Yes thats the one. That is really something how you can retrieve photos like that from one site to the other! I will look through my own photo file for a better photo.

Hey Matt...we have fish crows here in NC....I do not like them...they are much more cautious and fly much higher...making the local crows non-camittal...kill as many as you can....they are coming much to far inland here...wish they would stay in the coastal areas....
