Mouth blown CALLS
Permalink

I have a question for you guys on here about mouth blown calls.

I have 3 or 4 of these calls but I can't call a crow in with them. (They are all pretty cheap, the best one I have is a Mallard Tone)

I know what a call should sound like, I can call them in with just my voice. There have even been times when my Fox Pro doesn't work and I can bring them to me with my voice. The problem is, after about 20 minutes, it hurts my throat.

So my question is, how much difference does one of these better calls make? I keep hearing about these Gibson calls..........

I have a primos hand call & the only time it even appears to work is when I use it with the ecaller. I thought it was just me, but I learned that after awhile they don't repond as well to the ecaller either. Read lots of good stuff about the gibsons, I'm gona try one.

My advice would be to purchase Bob's instructional cd on how to hand call and pick up a Gibson. I also have a vintage lohman that is a close second. The plastic calls that I have sound like a dying cat.

I have a Gibson Short Magnum and it works great for close and far range calling. I also have some cheaper calls and to be honest they suck!! I also have a Mallardtone and it is better than the cheapo calls but still don't sound as good with me using it. Plus gibsons don't stick like the others. I need to buy another Gibson but I'm gonna wait till after Christmas when I have more money!! You can P.M. me if you need more info, Skip Woody uses a Gibson and you should hear him, if he was hidden you'd swear he is a crow.

Cant say for sure how old my lohman is, but it is old enough to cost $2.00 orginally.

Pic: wood call I got on ebay, looks terrible but sounds good, Lohman in the middle, and Lower Cedar Slayer on the right.

you can't go wrong with a Gibson.  And Bob's instructional CD helped me tons when I was just starting out.

I also have an instructional CD that Darrell made.  I'm not sure if it's available anymore.  You'd have to ask him.

I've watched his instructions for caling, it was good. I just think the problem is the cal I'm using. But with my voice, I can fool them.

I looked at some of those lohmans on ebay, they had some old lohman ads also listed. My guess from looking at the ads your call at $2 is probably from the late 50's, just guessin

I bought my Lohman on eBay for about $8 plus shipping. I hear a lot of talk about the Faulk C50 being a good piece. I have never heard a Faulk but it may be my next hand call.

If you want to get aggravated, just watch Jon and his Gibson calls. My hand calling sucks, then I go hunting with Jon, then my calling really sucks. He can walk up into to not where and get crows to come in with his calls.

It want be soon, like in a couple of week, all of mine are going in the trash and I'm ordering Gibsons. Its one of those things that, HEY everyone else is doing it for a reason. DA !!!!!!!!!! The calls work!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the company that Gibson gets his reeds and tone boards from. I have some other calls with the same guts, but they don't even come close to being Gibsons. Not even in the ball park.

Maybe so but you really rock a single reed howler, my friend.  Remember calling this one in for me?

Next time we get together we can go over a couple of things that I've noticed with your calling.  I haven't said anything before cuz there's always been somebody else with us.

btw what are you doing this fri or sat?

I'd be remiss if I didn't chime in to say that Crowmart sells all of Gibson's calls. Darrell tunes all of the calls himself...that makes a difference. Photos of the Gibsons crafted using the more exotic woods can be found on these CB forums...just scroll back and you'll see my posts here and on Buy, Sell Trade...visa, mastercard, personal check and ordering over the phone for your convenience. Doug @ CrowMart

I've ordered lots of stuff over the years from Doug (including a couple of Gibsons) and he's a stand up guy.

I'd like to think that I'm helping support this forum by doing that, too. Especially since Doug hasn't bombarded us with banner ads and such here.

I really like my JLM call. Jack makes a fine call with a wood toneboard. I also have a Knight & Hale molded call. Man does that thing sound like a crow!!!! I alternate between the 2 hand calls early in the AM then go to using the e-caller when they no longer respond to the hand calls. I use the e-caller for the busier sounds like fighting crows. I haven't mastered that one on a hand call at all.

If I go out on my own, all I will take is a mouth call. The primos old crow one works great, and combined with the Foxpro spitfire, they are deadly....
