100 Bird Day
Permalink

My friend Brucefinally got to the century mark today with our crow shoot. I would like to write up a great story with all the details but I am absolutely worn out..Long and short we picked up 94.....92 made the picture. One bird is stiil stuck in the top of an oak tree that also screwed us out of another 10 -15 birds late in the day due the crows decoying to the dead bird. And the other bird is in mycooler with a busted wing that couldn't fly.. The other 6 made it to thick woods where a coyote or some other varmint will enjoy later tonite.. It was one of the most fun shoots ever!!My freind Bruce used Kents #5's with 1 3/8 oz loads and dropped a huge number at 60+ yards on cautious high flyers.. I used #6's with 1.25 oz.. Both of us used Benelli's. My Maxus started jamming due to too much oil and I didn't clean it..:( More details to follow.. Enjoy the pictures.

Hey Matt, Thanks for the thanks. It was great day..Cold and in the snow (very rare for SC). But fun as heck..No, I have never had problems with it my Maxus but I've only owned it for a few months.. I sprayed it down with Rem oil real heavy before I went to the shoot. I even sprayed oil in the gas system.. I'm sure the issue was my fault..Not cleaning the gun, cold, 20 degrees, excessive oil in the gas system.I'm going to clean it later today and off to shoot tomorrow..Which will I choose to shoot? I always keep a back up gun and now it's a benelli M2 with a 2 shell extension...Big diffrence in the felt recoil of the two..Both are great!!The benelli never gives problems...

Mark, try and get ya some Breakfree CLP oil. It will clean it and lube it both. It will get that old oil off and then just leave a oil rag film on it. It is good to -35 or -40 . We found out rem oil doesn't work in cold conditions. They sell it at walley world.

Mark,,,,You said your MAXUS jammed up on you??? How dirty was it??? I have shot at least 7 cases thru mine without a glitch. I clean mine after every other outing, I was just wondering if you have had any other problems with it and do you like the gun ok???

Hi Mark,

Let me add my warm congratulations on breaking the 100 barrier.  It is truly a remarkable accomplishment and one you will never forget.  You are now a member of an elite group of crow hunters!

As far as lubing your Maxus, I use a "light" spray of Rem Oil on the trigger group and like Doccerny also use a couple of drops of Breakfree CLP on the bolt rails.  As you have learned, do not use any lube in the gas system, it will just be burned up and cake that area upon firing.

By the way, the Browning engineers recommend using Scotchbrite and not steel wool to clean up your gas system.  That way no steel wool gets into the alloy receiver area to cause accelerated wear.  I learned this at the Shot Show a couple of years back.

We in the TCP used to use those 1.5 ounce Kent Ulitimate Upland 6's and dubbed them - "Murder Incorporated".  They kill at both ends!  Using advice from our much more experienced crow hunters, we switched to AA and Remington trap or sporting clay loads with 8's and have had great success when shooting our "full power" shotguns.  As you may know, we usually use our "Metroguns" with AA Featherlite 8's or our reloaded clones for high volume crow shoots.

Keep your posts and pictures coming, we love to see your successes.

Regards,

Gadget Bob

Chip,
No other  except the occasional missed shot..:).  But I sprayed lub in the gas system..Stupid!! Some kind folks have given me a lot of info so I will do as they say.. The Maxus is a fine gun and I really like it.. The Benelli is a great gun as well.. I will shoot the "cleaned" Maxus tomorrow on another crow shoot and the Benelli will be there as back up..

Yea, thats the right stuff, Winchester put their label on it about a year ago or so. The make it in a squeeze bottle and a spray can, I use both. After you get it cleaned and lubed you should notice a big difference in how slick it cycles.

The cripple only had one broken wing tip..He was a little fellow and was screamer and fighter...When I went after him he just cowered down and I picked him up. On the way back  to the blind he started screaming like a raped ape..His screaming   brought in two huge groups of crows and oddly enough we didn't drop any from the groups.. After I got in the blind he was fighting me hard so I just shoved him in the cooler ( flexible type with zipper top) to keep him from walking off.. I forgot about him until just about the time we left..Got him home fed him and left him the cooler over nite.. This morning I put him a large cardboard box and fed him peanuts, pecans, sunflower seed and water..He ate and ate and shi$ and shi$.. When I went to WalMart for the gun cleaner he must have gotten enough strength to clear the top of the 34" tall box and he was gone when I got home.. I say good luck to him..Maybe me or one of you guys  can draw another bead on him someday..

LOL, the ultimate Catch and Release. Can't believe he started eating so quick. You'd think he'd be too petrified to eat for a few days.
