Those are in fact ravens. I was in Yosemite on Christmas, the day after a big snow storm to take pictures of the park. We try to go every Christmas day as we only live about a hour from the park.

We parked and went in for some lunch and when we came out the birds were digging through a bag of trash. I bought a package of hotdogs and baited them in the back of truck for pictures.

It has been a tough year for those birds with all the snow and wet weather we have been having.

If you look close a couple of those birds have three pieces of hotdog in their beak. There were at least 20 birds trying for a meal.

Those are some pretty tough birds.

So, that's what a raven looks like. 

Their beak is larger ("thicker"?), and more stout than the crows we ground check.

Handsome birds.

Ravens are always bigger than crows. Very rarely will you see them in flocks of 4 or more, mostly in pairs.

The trick to raven ID in flight is the tail feathers. The ravens have rounded tail feathers and crows the tail feathers are flat.

Remember Raven = round.

Ravens around here are usually above 2000 ft in elevation and crows are the valley dwellers.

We have lots of Ravens up here, but they very seldom make the mistake of coming in to the decoys or a call.

They are so much more intelligent than crows,
