Why no bills on your hats?

I have seen in several post that some folks don't wear hats that have a bill on them. Why not?

It sticks out too far and moves too much when you move your head. I dislike them for waterfowling.

Hi Kevin,

It cuts down on you're visibility having you're cap pulled down tight on you're head with the bill sticking straight out.

If it bothers some folks they might look into wearing a bow hunters cap with a short bill on it!

In the dvd "The Art of Crow Hunting" you will see the bill of my cap tiped up like Gomer Pile for just that reason!

Go to "the broken rib" post and you will see Dick Kilbane wearing a bow hunters cap with a short bill, good close up photo!

I have been using a bow hunters hat with a built in face mask for a good twenty years. I now have a Boonie hat with a face mask. Absolutely a regular hat blocks your vision. Even that small bill bothers me.

The only reason I would wear a bill cap is to shade my eyes or to keep rain off my face. I wear glasses and rain on my face really annoys me. angered.gif

I dont like a long bill either. I cant see the sky good enuff. I do wear one of those visor beenies though. I wear it backwards and if the sun is in my face or its raining i spin it around. It keeps my ears warm and when it rains it also keeps the rain off my glasses. It helps keep a hood out of your face when the wing gets blowing and you want your hood up also. When you turn your head with a long billed hat you can see it a long ways off, not so with a short bill or booney hat. My son gave me one a couple of years ago cause he didnt like it and I have worn nothing but to wingshoot since. Cant duck or crow hunt without it.

I really HATE a bill on a hat when hunting ANYTHING that flies. (crows, ducks, geese, etc...) I have been burned so many times because I didn't see them till too late.......
Now I never wear a hat with a bill.

About 2 weeks ago, my buddy wore a bowhunters hat with a short bill about an inch and a half long. I watched a crow float right in above him and he never saw it. He probably won't wear that again. Even the little bill was too much.

I have a ball cap with the attached face-mask and a standard size bill. I wear glasses so the built in netting is really nice as it allows the moisture to escape without fogging my glasses. All other mask I have tried will fog my glasses at some point during a hunt. I took a pair of kitchen shears and cut the bill in half and glued the cut portion to the stub that was left making a bill that is about a 1 1/4". It is perfect as I can barely see the edge of it in my upper peripheral vision. It is amazing what a difference it makes in picking up birds that are coming in from behind. Thank for the tips.

I don't like seeing the bill of the cap when I mount & swing the gun, don't know why I see it but I do. I prefer a stocking cap.
