It has been brutal here in the deep southern portion of Illinois. Most of the birds have gone south. What few are left have a Harvard scroll around their neck. While waiting for a reverse migration one needs to keep his shooting eyes honed With a little help from JR. and one of his road dogs that can always be arranged where cattle feed and cold weather brings the need
Bob thanx for asking I have 2 sons, yes the one on the right in the pic is mine, the one on the left is one of his buddies. Those 2 boys right there are the most hardcore young hunters I have ever seen. Both of them are totally consumed with it. They would rather hunt than eat. The one in the pic is my youngest son, he started going with me when he was in pull ups. I bought him an 1100 youth model LT when he was 9, I took him to the deer stand when he was 7 and it rained then sleeted and the temp dropped about thirty degrees, he never moved complained or said a word for 7 hours straight . I knew right then I had a hunting buddy for life. He is now 15 and can shoot better than any 30 year old he has ever hunted with. He can blow a duck and goose call like he was born with it in his hand,,,,He calls his own turkeys in by mouth and has since he was 10. I just wish he could have it like I had it back in the 70's. My oldest boy would not walk across the street to kill a world class buck or shoot a 100 crows. They are the exact opposite. I am very proud of him he is a sophomore in college, has a 4.0 GPA, wrestles division 1 and is commited to the ROTC program. He will be commisioned when he graduates and serve his country in the US Army.. 5th generation Army,,, I have no idea why he never enjoyed hunting and fishing. That has puzzled me from day one. The good lord blessed my wife and I with those 2 boys they are both very smart and have good heads on their shoulders. Thanx for asking I love to talk about my boys
My hats off to you and your son. From one vet to another, Thank You Sir for your service and tell your son thank you for me also. What an honor to have a son willing to serve and give of himself to protect others. You must be proud!!!!

It's like that with my brother & I, I always had it in me where he just went along for the ride when we were kids. My dad could see it at a young age, thats why he took me to Alaska when I was 10 1/2 years old to shoot one of those big brown bears on Kodiak Island. My brother was more than happy to stay home!

Chip: You are one very lucky man! Having a son as a dedicated hunting partner, one that is good at it, will be your partner in the field probably for life coupled with your wrestling, 4.0, 5th generation Army officer son is simply a description of a family treasure: yours.
Thanx Skip, I truely am blessed but a little nervous to many local boys lately haven't made it back. When I was in that didn't bother me a bit but when it's your kid it's a different story Shane I can't wait to see what you have come up with on the pigeons,,,, you know how I am you may as well just send me one with a bill cause you know I will have to buy one....LOL I have considered the pigeons deeks on ureaduck, have you seen them they are awesome
You are, and should be, very proud of both of your sons. I am blessed with two fine sons, too - but neither cares about hunting or shooting. I wish they were, but more primers for me!
I was forced to adopt Texas Matt, and he does enjoy shooting and hunting!!! He also buy his own primers and that is a big bonus.
I usually have a mixed bag if i hunt a dairy farm down the road a bit. A few crows and after they are done I move to this tree with no leaves and very few branches. The pigeons love that tree. I scratch down a few and go home to take a nap. I like the pigeon shoot as good as the crow shoot, almost. We just dont have alot of them.
I know how you feel about your boys, I have 2 boys also. One is 8 the other is 12. My oldest killed his first goose the first trip he took a gun. I start taking him with me regularly when he was 6 and when he turned 8 he hunted with a 20 ga. thats what he killed his first goose with, and thats how old he was when he killed it! My youngest getting the hunting bug but he has turned onto everything about a year latter than his big brother did. All kids are different. There both fishing fools too. I dread buying 3 federal duck stamps, especialy if they go up to 25 bucks as rumor has it. Good to see pics of a dad putting his boy on some birds. Good job to him and you!

Hats off to includig the kids Chip. So mant guys don't include the youngsters and later wonder why their kids don't hunt or fish. Bob had a good comment regarding a hunting personality. Can see at and early age the ones that have the genetic disposition for hunting, hockey, baseball or what ever.

Troy,,, Heck with the duck stamps How bout the waders and dont forget the shells. My boy has shot I know at least 4 cases of Gun club loads at pigeons alone. And when he is in the field I usually give him the green light on the starlings, Cow birds and grackles too. I believe that is what has sharpened his skills, different birds with different speeds and me competing with him. One of my greatest pleasures in life is to be sitting back about 30 yards from him and one of his young huntin buddies and see a big group of pigeons comming in. I like to watch them hunker down and slide them hands "down real slow like mollases in winter time" and curl them thumbs around that safety and wait for em to git right, then they come up and dump em. Then the high fives as they go roll em over. check for bands and make decoys out of em.. Man I can watch them boys do that all day long and never fire a shot. Boys that is truely priceless. I have to admit I enjoy that better than seeing him hit a triple with the bases loaded in the bottom of the last inning in a tie game. I would'nt want him to know that though Only in America and I mean ONLY in America!!!!!
