I have over 30 crow decoys.. very seldom do I put them all out. Honestly it depends on what kind of hunt you are doing.. you could bust your hump putting out 30 dekes and have one crow show up, or you could skip the dekes, hide your caller in a bush and have 100 show up.
I am editing video of a big spread I just used. I will post it when I'm done.

One to 14 and as many as 3 busters to boot, depending on setup. If birds are there and want to come in, they are comming. If we are setting up at daylight, after a few minuets, we have enough dead ones on the ground to make up for lack of decoys.

ok thanks guys. another question: how many do you usually put in the trees? and if you are using an owl (i have one) do you usually put it above the crows or have the crows above it?
Bird of prey ALWAYS below the crows. Crows will not allow themselves to get beneath a hawk or owl as they become vulnerable. Occasionally we will but I don't usually put them in trees as I have not seen it to be a game changer. Others will disagree, just not my experence here.

What call are you using with that Owl setup? Just the owl and crow fight?
FoxPro sounds, crows, crows gathering, crows fighting. First crow I shoot I fix under the owl on a fish hook screwed to the base. I place this setup in the open and at times no calling is needed. Many times walked off back to the truck to stretch my legs or to get a thermos of tea only to find a bunch of crows beating on the owl upon my return.
Often use that rig for R&G. Takes only a minuite or so to set up. Crows will fixate on the owl and at times not even care about shotgun blasts until half dozen of their numbers have been killed.
Just don't let a mob of crows "boil up" over the thing as for the few you kill a lot more will be educated. I always shoot each crow as they come in as I would much rather have one or two targets infront than a dozen twisting and turning.

I can't imagine why someone would want to set up that many deeks for shooting crows. It would a monumental undertaking to do so IMO. Scouting, location and good calling coupled with decent shooting skills are more important than surrounding ones self with dozens of decoys. Dead crows can be retrieved, tied together in pairs and tossed into branches behind to add to the spread if thought nessisary.

That makes me tired just thinking about it. I don't like putting out my full spead and I only have 8 plus one Buster.

Here in Alabama there are several fields that makes it worth while putting all the decoys out that you have. We do not have huge crow roosting areas that I am aware of like the northern states do. If I believe we can kill anywhere from 50 to a hundred crows plus then I will put out 40 crow decoys and let me tell ya the dead crows only add to it ;) lol I have 24 flambeau and carrylite decoys, then 8 flocked greenhead crow decoys. I also deploy the crow flapper which is a machine that you put a dead crow onto and it flaps the wings of a dead bird. I typically hunt with 2 other guys so thats enough decoys by far. If you expect to do a run and gun hunt then I would only put out a few decoys since you will be moving from one area to another rather quickly
when you guys do put dec.s in the trees how do you get them up HIGH. ive heard some guys use the fishing pole with a weight to throw over a limb and then hoist up the dec. but if you do that wouldnt you go through a million yards of fishing line?how about a good telescoping pole? does anybody use one that works well that you could recommend?i usually go with 4 or 5 on the ground and 2 in the trees as look-outs and too help keep eyes off me. but i always want them up higher .

Just so happens I'm editing a video showing how to put decoys in a tree with a telescoping pole it's not rocket science.
Shaddart you can get the crow flapper from this website which the company is located overseas. http://www.decoying.co.uk/ Its a deadly decoy setup and it works a lot better than the mojo crow in my belief. How much more realistic can you get when there is a real crow flapping its wings ha ha
