Surely some of you reload so what is a good load for crow shooting? I will be using Remington hulls and either 7.5 or 6 shot. (maybe some of each untill I settle on what my Browning likes best.

I use Hodgen TITE WAD for my 12 gauge, and INTERNATIONAL CLAYS for my 20 gauge.I use #8 shot for crows in both and #9 shot for pigeons. The Hodgen powder burns real clean.I use Remington Gun Club hulls because I get them for free.Wads I use the CLAYBUSTERS brand, here is where I get my stuff. I order with two other guys and we split the shipping and hazard fee,so it works out great.

Knobby,

I've tried some different powders but have settled for Titegroup, either WAA12 or Rem. Fig 8 wads and 8 shot.  With Titegroup you use less powder but still get the speed (1220-1250fps).  I've been using Remington hulls so far and no complaints.

I started off with Universal and International and they are great powders as well.

Same with the TITEWAD and CLAYS by Hodgen, you can use less and get good patterns. We found the UNIVERSAL burned dirty in the 12 gage,But it is my go to powder for the 20 gauge handsdown.smile

i've been loading waa12,s 1 1/4 oz loads with win209 primers, rp12 wads, wsf powder & 5 or 6/s. I'm pleased with them, but I shoot at high passing birds, so the 5s or 6s might be more than you need.

Any trap load recipe at 1200-1235 fps/ 1 1/8 oz. of what ever shot you choose. Remington Gun Clubs load up nice. Back in the day I used to load some one ounce loads with old style WW compression formed hulls at 1290 fps. These days I mainly shoot factory stuff as very little financial gain with rolling your own.

Ok
Cool
First go online and get the Lyman reloading fifth edition Shotshell reloading manual
Should be around 20 bucks.
Yes you can ask online but to save your hands face and gun get the manual.

It's cheap insurance .

After that read it not the load data but the front half of the book. It's on how to reload safely.
Do you have a press?
Right now I would dumpster dive my butt off to get a good number of rem hulls.
Or start shooting the rem gunclub or STS or nitro and save the hulls.
Is there a gunclub near you that has skeet or trap?
Sporting clay courses offer some of the best dumpster diving. But I would ask the owner before just taking the hulls. Some try and resell them some don't.
I don't like to pick threw em if I can get garbage cans full to pick from take em home and sort them asap so if they did get a bit wet they won't rust into a pile of crap.
Do this sorting out side in a garage or shed and where gloves some people like to spit in them cans so be warned.
After I get a bunch of dumpster hulls that are nasty food covered or suspected spit I wash em then set em up in front of a fan or dehumidifier for quite a few days then I put them in a open top bucket when they are dry. Set em aside for a while water and powder don't mix.

If dumpster diving is not your cup of tea
Google pap Charlie hulls
He only sells part of the year but he has nice hulls
The other is gunbroker.com
1000 STS hulls should be around 40-45 bucks
Gun clubs 20-30 or free as they are all most easy Pickens.

The "go to load" is all in what works for you.

Alliant shotgun powders are made in the USA

so why not use one of there powders and keep America working
More later ----feel free to ask questions -----

http://data.hodgdon.com/shotshell_load.asp
I checked with Hodgdon online and yes I guess 32 grains of longshot should get you 1400 fps but I don't see the fig 8 wad ???
But using that powder you would get 1/2 as many loads per lb of powder.
That's a lot of powder wow how's the shoulder.
There are cheaper options, but I still don't see where the fig 8 wad data comes from.

J D,

I shoot a beretta 391 sporting which is weighted and fitted to me to redoce recoil so you need,nt fret about my ole shoulder none!! The figure 8 wad is the same one remington puts in a nitro 27 and sts their top end competion loads. They get em to crimp and so can I just as good as new(almost)

This is my recipe and it is in the reloading manual I have.

Obviously it is not what you shoot but as you know this is why they sell coke and pepsi!

Hey Everyone,

Tried a new load with my 100's and 100's of WinAA/HS hulls that I have.  JD1983 gave me some good advice and I also did some more research.  Watch Em Fall and I loaded up some test rounds and they were awesome.

I used:

WinAA/HS hulls (2 3/4)
24ish gr. of Unique powder
WAA12 wads
1 1/8 oz. of 7.5 magnum shot
Win. 209 primers.

These loads are supposed to be around 1270 FPS.  Real crow killing loads.  I haven't shot any at birds yet...hopefully this weekend.

Any of you guys ever experiment with buffer in the lighter 1 1/8th oz. loads? Or is it even worth using in lite loads? I know it helps patterns in heavy loads.

Never ever add buffer to a load that does not call for it.
If you want to tighten up your loads switch to some data that uses a stiffer wad like bpi's trap commander that is designed for longer ranges. They have data for there wads. Or try different wads in general. Being a maverick in reloading is not worth loosing a hand or half your head.
