Do you differentiate between the two different birds??  I only go for crow's myself as the Raven is a special bird mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 8:7 as the bird that Noah sent to find land.  What is your feedback fellow "Crow Busters"????

Ravens are larger with a deeper sounding voice.

Ravens in flight have a rounded set of tail feathers as crows have a flat across the tail feathers. This is the easiest way to tell raven from a crow.

Ravens almost croak when they call, nothing high pitched about it.

Here are some pictures of high country ravens.

Here in Maine, Ravens are protected by law.

They have never come in to our decoys or calling that I am aware of. Usually, they land in a tree about 200 yards away and sit there while the crows are killed.

If you are blazing away I can see how they could get bagged. If one comes in by itself Im pretty sure you'd know its a raven...they are BIG...and they have a deep croak...

I use to call them while out duck hunting if the shooting was slow.. Tune the crow call so it has a lot of flap in the reed, and grunt really low, but it tears up the throat trying to grunt low enough to reporduce the ravens call..

Also they have a much more pronounced thick beak...

I almost pulled a Raven out of the sky in the UP of Michigan.

I knew it was off limits when I saw the wing span and heard the deep GRAH GRAH!

They are an amazing bird.  For me...its an over-sized crow...they are big boys

In the UP of Michigan they attack like crows and you need to be cautious with the caller running.  They are very common in the UP and they are everywhere in the cedar swamp lands.

You cant kill Ravens no matter what state you are in. They are federally protected.

I believe that is the point of this discussion,no-one here has or will intentionally shoot one.My point is that they do show up over the spread and they do not always vocalize coming in.If they do you are all set,you know you have a raven coming in. If they do not, even though they are bigger, you will still have a hard time telling its a raven ,without looking at the tail as shown in the post by Splash. So go forth to the field and be vigilant.smile

P.S. Ravens have only been in my area for about ten years, before that I never heard of one till I went bear hunting in northern Maine.confuse
