anyone ever go out and leave the E caller at home? i am thinking of taking out 4-5 dekes, a shotgun, and a hand call tomorrow and just try and call some in on some fresh spread manure.
around here lately they they are turning away from my e-caller and high tailing it out of the country. They get to within 80 yards and do a u turn and I've tried everything
If you can blow a hand call fairly well you can get some good results solong as you don't have to call the birds beyond 175 to 200 yards. Some say they will respond a lot further, and indeed they may, but I've never seen them respond beyond that point.
Years ago when it would get to wet to drive in the fields I would walk in and make a makeshift blind. To cut down on what I had to carry I just used a pair of Mallardtone crow calls, one 20 gauge shotgun, 250 rounds of ammo and a 7 gallon bucket to sit on.
I ran out of ammo several times and had to walk back for more. Had quite a few shoots in the 175 to 200 bird range and a couple over 400 with just a hand call. I was in a good feeding area where new birds were arriving at spaced intervels throughout the whole morning and into the early afternoon. Plus I didn't have to call them to far, this was in open country where I could see them coming.

Most of my crow hunting has been done with just a hand call and a shotgun. I eventually got some decoys, then I got a couple flappers, then I made an ecaller, then I got sick of being tangled in the home made caller so I got a FOXPRO Fury, now I can fill the back of my truck with all these cool doodads....
I tell ya though...calling in crows with a hand call just makes the hunt sooo much better.. I even get a buzz calling them in from across the neighborhood.
My first 20 years of crow hunting was done solely with hand calls. To add more difficulty to the formula, the two guys I hunted with couldn't call a crow if their lives depended on it.
One guy was French Canadian, a horrendous caller that couldn't talk without waving his hands in the air. My other friend was quiet and reserved but he too never got the hang of crow calling. He could never put any life and urgency into his calling as it was just "boring" for the lack of other words.
I switched to a FoxPro about a decade ago and my kill has trippled. I also mostly hunt solo these days as I like all the crows to myself
