I hunt a flyway with a few thousand birds, nothing huge. I am about 2 miles from the roost and they always seem to come through at the same time, 2 hours before dark. I've backtracked them for a few miles and can't seem to locate where they come from.
My question is why do they come through at the same time everyday? As the days get longer, they come through a little later everyday. I know deer move because of the amount of light getting to their eyes. Is this the same for crows?
About a month ago they were coming in 3 hours before dark and now it has changed too 2.
My next question is, why do they fly this same path everyday? the roost is across from a large mall and right next to a major highway. The area they are coming from is a lot more quite and a lot less people then where they are holding up for the night so its not for safety.

From what I have learned in my short carier, they roost in populated areas for safty. No chance of someone shooting the roost.

I honestly believe that crows and may other animals know the safe zones.... no shooting inside city limits....
Plus when I drive around town at the butt crack of dawn I ALWAYS see pigeons hanging around the fast food restaurants ... like a 35 mile stretch of freeway and every fast food joint had pigeons on their sign... I am convinced that the smell of hash browns, sausage egg and cheese biscuits, and bacon are just too good to ignore.... I bet crows like bacon too.
