The Last Crow of the Season Was The SWEETEST!!!!

I had killed 5 and the crows stopped flying. We were trying to get Savannah a crow. She has been trying to kill one all year. She had only shot once this morning as she is very tentative and waits to long to pull the trigger. We got out of the blind and walked around to pick up a long bird and stretch our legs. When we got back to the blind I turned on the death cry and started hard hand calling. Two birds came in from across the field and gave her a crossing shot. Again she had trouble getting the gun up and on the bird. By the time she could get on it the bird was past her and she swung through it a touched the trigger. She centered it at about 25 yards with the little 20 ga and a cloud of feathers erupted with the bird crumpling! We were so excited. As we celebrated, the black confetti floated in the breeze right over our heads! I am so proud of her. She has only been able to hit one clay out of no telling how many tries. This was quite an accomplishment for her.

The smile on her face says it all!!  Glad that she finnaly got a chance to connect with one of the "bandits"  Now you have another "youngun" committed to the great sport that we all enjoy.  Hope that you were able to keep the buttons on your shirt, from the pride in seeing her get her first bird.  I had the same great feeling when I got the chance to take my grandson out for his first successful crow shoot.  Congradulations to you both!!

I am laughing my butt off as I post this. This is an excerpt form my 12 year old daughters blog...

We went crow hunting yesterday at 5:00 in the morning! We killed 6 crows. I had been trying all year to kill on, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. Well... Yesterday just happened to be the last day of crow season, and at the very end of our hunt..... I killed one! In the air, 25 or 30 yards away, not just winged it, but knocked him grave-yard dead, as my neighbor would say!

Congrats Savannah!  That's awesome.

What age are kids (under 12) allowed to hunt in your state.  Here in PA they can't hunt crow until they are 12 years old.  My 7 year old (boy) loves to go out (and watch) with Watch Em Fall and I.  I don't even have to wake him up in the morning.  He comes out from his bedroom all bright eyed and bushy tailed just waiting to go.  He hasn't been out since November cause the weather has been pretty cold.  Got a 9 year old (boy) too that goes occasionally and I'm hoping my 5 year old daughter will want to tag along.

Again, congrats on whacking your first crow.

Polish Hammer,

Mississippi is often the butt of jokes as being the last in most categories when compared to other state and in hunting it is no different I am proud to say. We don't have all the secular progressives, anti-gun folks, and liberals that most states do. We still think it is a great idea to not only teach our kids to hunt, but to actually encourage it.

That said, our state requires a child 12 years or older take a hunters ed course before hunting alone. Any child any age can hunt and shoot while in the company of a licensed adult (21 or older). It is not uncommon for 8 yr old kids to kill deer while hunting with their parents here. An occasional 6 year old will kill a deer. A friends 12
year old son took a 140 or 150 class deer(can't remember which) with a bow earlier this year. 

Our state has LOTS of youth only seasons to encourage youth participation.

Some examples are:

Youth seasons before all open seasons.
Youth seasons after Open duck season when there are sill more ducks here than cornbread and turnip greens. (This one makes the adults jealous!)
Youth season with gun of choice though all open primitive weapon seasons for deer.  So basically form around the first of Nov till the end of Jan kid can shoot any gun.
Relaxed antler regulation on bucks so kids can take one antlered deer UNDER the antler size limit.
We have very liberal bag limits on deer. 3 antlered deer and 5 antler-less and 2 more if you bow hunt. If you are on a DMAP program, they issue tag to kill many more does. Kids are often encouraged to kill lots of does on the DMAP places.

Our Department of Wildlife, Fisheries' and Parks does a great job of getting kids into the woods as they are the future of our sport.
