In 1971 my friend Dick was in Libya. At customs the customs agent was looking through Dicks stuff and found a kleenex box with all the flags on it from around the world. He took out his knife and cut out the Isralie flag and said to Dick & his friend "you follow me" next thing Dick knows the both of them are in jail! Dick says all those people are nuts! 24 hours later they kicked him out of the country! Quaddafi came to power in Libya in 1968.
Here is another neat story:
Dick is in India hunting tigers in 1964. He is riding on top of an Indian elephant and the guy who stays with the elephant all the time 24/7 says to Dick "take out one of you're . 375 rounds and throw it on the ground" so Dick takes out a .375 round and pitches it on the ground, the guy has the elephant pick it up with the tip of his trunk and hand it back to Dick! It took 3 weeks but Dick got his tiger.

Bob, Those are 2 awesome stories! I do current events as part of my history class so we've been discussing this Libya issue.
Also like that elephant story. Great example of the elephant's dexterity with its trunk. That's cool. I like to read tiger hunting and African stories, my favorites are the ones written by Jim Corbett, Robert Ruark and John Hunter.
My dad stayed at Robert Ruark'e house in Kenya in 1959, back when there wasn't a building in Nirobi over two stories tall! He took a camera man with him from England and shot 16mm movies in the bush for 30 days. He has a great segment of a rhino charge where the rhino comes to rest about 30 feet from him and the white hunter! My dad used a .577 double rifle on the rhino and a .600 nitro express on the elephant; both were Holland & Holland double rifles. He used a .378 Weatherby magnum on three cape buffalos.
I used the .375 H & H magnum in a bolt action on big game in africa and found the .375 to be very accurate, great cartridge. I used a .270 Winchester (pre 1964) on the smaller game such as impala, wart hogs & even zebra. The 130 grain bullets I was using was a little light for animals the size of a zebra but if you had a good hold on the animal you could make some neck shots which prooved very deadly. On another zebra I wanted to see what a shoulder shot would do with the 130 grainers, still all one shot kills; on the shoulder shots the animal would turn perhaps 45 degrees on impact and then go down in a heap.
I had the .375 with me on a large Greater Kudu that was a running shot. When that 300 grain bullet hit the mark he went down and from the speed at which he was going made him skid along the ground until he came to rest at the base of a tree.

That is awesome Bob. I just finished the book, USE ENOUGH GUN by Ruark. That's about the fifth time that I've read it. My dream is to hunt Africa someday.
Have you ever read HUNTER by John Alexander Hunter? Fantastic book.
You mentioned those guns by Holland and Holland. I went to London England in 2003 and I couldn't wait to go into the Holland and Holland gun shop there. I had even responded with the shop manager before going over and he told me I was welcome to "come in and handle the weapons." I drooled the whole way down Bruton Street and then almost died when I found they were closed for the day.......

Erwin Rommel was forced to commit suiside by Adolf Hitler before the end of the war. Rommel was a brilliant comander even if he was a kraut!
Bob A.
Yes thats one of the reasons why the Germans lost the war. Hitler had smart people working for him but refused to listen to them. Apparently some of the tankers in the gulf war had photos of Rommel taped to the inside of their armoured vehicles.

That does not surprise me, he was a soldiers solder.
I can tell you I sure wouldn't have wanted to go against those Panzers with a Sherman tank, those poor guys got slaughtered on the American side.
Patton's son is still alive I'm pretty sure, he was an Army man as well.
Bob A.
...and his son should be proud of his father as well. Yup, the Sherman was no match for the big German armour. Only sheer numners out did the Germans. Still, you would never get me into one of those things for all the shotgun shells in America!

Bob, so if I read between the lines, I think what you're saying, is that the 375 is kinda like 6s & the 270 is kinda like 7 1/2s or 8s, right ? JUST KIDDIN, LOL!!

I'm just not seeing why we(the West) are intervening in this mess. I prefer dictators over Muslim brotherhood any day....
AMEN AMEN AMEN! I say feed'em pork and cap'em between the black souless eyes, then they would want out of this contry instead of wanting to convert all of us to islam or kill us. There are brotherhood groups all over the US. And our goverment wants to disarm us, I mean how stupid is that. They might need our shotguns one day but o they forgot they took them away from us. I hope that never happens.

Our actions in Libya in the last week struck me odd, we are supporting the French as they conduct air combat operations against Libya and contributing to enforcing a no fly zone. Turn back the clock to 1986, I was on AD in the USAF. Ronald Reagan ordered an air attack on Libya for their role in bombing a disco in Germany killing US military personnel. The USAF conducted the mission using F-111E and F's stationed in the UK. Our allies the French denied overflight of french air space by the F-111's. This greatly extended the time and distance the F-111's had to fly and required additional air refueling support. One F-111 was lost with both crew members, Libya claimed it was taken down by AAA fire which I think is highly unlikely. The 111 was inbound over the water flying at high speed using the Terrain Following Radar system the 111 was famous for. The 111's had the element of surprise at that point a shoot down was unlikely. Crew error through fatigue or mechanical malfunction is most likely and everyone was angry with France at the time. Oddly enough the French embassy was struck by a bomb from one of the 111's, oops
So why are we helping the French, who are the Rebels and what do they stand for? President Obama said this would not involve the use of any US ground forces, huh? We lost an F-15E Strike Eagle and both crew members were rescued. Ground troops are inserted as part of a TRAP mission to rescue downed airman. I have little doubt that forward combat air controllers are operating in Libya was well.
Yes,NH I agree the whole afair has me scrathing my head, while I would love to see Mohmar drawn and quatered I am confused by our President given his stance against wars in Afganistanand Iraq.If saving 50 million there, loosing all those beloved American serviceman and money made us paria's to the world, then why this??

Just another example of Obama speaking out of both sides of his mouth.
Well your right there, the problem with the President is that his whole life he was exposed to people who did not like this country,he was not exposed to Veterans and heros who gave so much to so many,he looks at this counrty as a fatally flawed colonial power.I guess if my father were a die hard marxist,I would probably think the same, but instead I am the product of immigrants who came from some terrible places in europe and made it here through hard work sacrifce and sweat,as I am sure many of you are also!!
