Season is over (Sept-March Fri Sat Sun Mon only) First year crow hunting... learned a lot!  Winter hunts are fun.  Best days were 10 and 11, but here are 4 my oldest son took.  Also had this one land right next to me on a 12 o'clock low shot coming straight at me - I cold have caught it.  My best story, not sure even pros can top this, winged a crow straight over head, it flew in circle left turn only, and end up flying UP to about 300 feet (on an updraft IDK), before it ran out of gas and spiraled for nearly 15 seconds to the ground.  I wish I caught it on video.

Finger Lakes Region, near Ithaca. Might need to fish for rainbows today. Fishing in the tributaries opened yesterday.

Rook,

The closest thing I have is years back, goose hunting. I shot at a crow 50, 60 yards with T shot. I guess one pellet caught it on one side. It proceded to fly in circles for a good ten minutes about 80 yards away. Eventually I lost site over a tree line. I was on the wrong side of the river. The crow could'nt get away, but could'nt reach it.

Shad,

Did you ever notice how big the crows are on the salmon river. I guess all the eggs and carcasses grow'em big.

Rook, yeah we fish the salmon river every fall, between all the corn the Douglaston run plants & the dead salmon theres no shortage of food. My son is down at basspeo in auburn today, you in that area or farther west ? Did you get any rainbows today ? That's a beautiful area out by the finger lakes, I'm not real familiar with it, but been out that way quite a few times. Been on my way to fish Seneca for a long time now & still haven't made it. Fished Catherine creek quite a few times, but that was a long time ago. We're starting to catch some pike & some huge carp on the Hudson, everything is eating black jigs & twister tails, just waiting on the striper run now, probably another 4 or 5 weeks. Jerry

Mike, sorry I thought that question was from Rook. You fish the salmon run or winter fish for steelies ? I like the steelies, but I just don't have it in me anymore to snowshoe in, then put my waders on. . Have done pretty well on the steelies in April the last couple of years, getting ready to make the trip in the next couple of weeks. Jerry

BassPro is not too far away - 45 min max. I'm from Geneva originally -- north end of Seneca Lake, Catherine Creek is tributary at south end of the Lake at Watkins Glen. We fished Cayuga Inlet a little today for the big rainbows -- tributary to Cayuga Lake in Ithaca (Cornell territory). We didn't catch any but a lot of people are -- 4-6 lbs 22-28 inches typical - nice fish. Now Auburn (where BassPro is) has received national attention for it's crazy crow roosting behavior in past years -- thousands of birds. Not sure how it is these days.

Mike, when crows fly in circles like that usually they are hit it the head. Just like ducks hitting the water and swiming in circlessmile

shad,

We go up mid Oct. Mostly kings in the river, but I'm looking for coho browns and steelhead. Kings all get released but I'll keep the rest. 2 years ago I dragged out 2 cohos and a 15lbs. steelhead one mourning. Steelies are tough when I go but they start to appear. I'm 5 hours south so once a year is all we do.

Mike, we usually go up 5 or 6 times, managed a few cohos & steel in Sept & lost 1 brown, all came from ballpark pool. Jerry

rook, I like that road down to Auburn from the thruway lots of nice farm land, can't say I've noticed the crows but I've noticed all the geese. Long way for me to go to hunt crows, but if theres that many, I'd make the run. Jerry

8fish, I've used 6 steel for ducks with an imp/mod choke, pretty effective. I also use 20 ga 6 bismuth in a swamp I hunt for woodies & I really like them. Jerry

12 gauge 6 steel is deadly on ducks through a IC choke inside of 35 yards. This I can tell you for sure!

Rook-ie,

Thats nice country, I've hunted crows in that neck of the woods with Jerry Byroade. I love the Italian restaurants in that part of New York State. A lot of the crows that used to be in Auburn moved over to Geneva because of the hazing. The Finger Lakes are very nice, I saw a fair amount of duck blinds for divers on those lakes.

I thought I never left Kansas when I was in the Finger Lakes, the people were so friendly, nothing like Long Island or New York City!

Back in 1972 before I moved to Kansas I was trying to get permission on a place that just changed hands. I shot there for years on this Long Island estate about 1 mile north of C.W. Post College off route 25A on Long Island. It was always good for 50 to 75 crows anytime I went to that spot. The new owner said "we don't allow hunting" that did it for me, I said to myself "no way am I going to spend the rest of my life in this place" and moved out of there in 1974. I also hunted some of the same estates Dick Mermon hunted south of 25A many years ago.

I've used lead #4 (when it was legal) on ducks, geese. Also, on crows and I've seen them fly in circles, ever smaller circles, towards the ground. I imagine them calling "mayday, mayday" as they spiral ever closer to the ground until they crash.

shad,

What's up with Douglaston @ $45 a day now. Catch and release except kings and cohos. They really want a small crowd now. Gives the cromers a chance to get up top now.

Mike; never been in there, $45 is ridiculous & they still snag.If I wanted to snag I'd stand on the bridge & get them before they went into the douglaston. Jerry
