i just recently purchased a new hand call its the hammerin crow call. does anyone know how effective this call is? and the best ways and areas to use it in? I am also looking to get an e caller for 300 or less i was looking at the fox pro spitfire? anyone know how good it is? and also looking to get more decoys either from people on here or retail any recommendations?
There is a guy selling a FX-3 for $300 in the buy section. Plus it has JS and Bob's calls on it. I don't know if he still has it. I paid $400 for mine without those good calls. It's used so it's up to you.
I'd recommend looking through some past posts and search on topics of interest. It's tough to get solid advice because we have members from all over the US, Canada and maybe abroad. Not saying that their advice isn't great..it's just that there are so many factors (where you hunt, population of crows, etc.) that come into play.
Personally, I hunt in PA and there aren't huge populations of crows. The most I've ever seen at one time is probably around the 400-500 mark...and that doesn't happen often. I have a Spitfire and love it. The remote feature is great. We (Watch Em Fall & I) will have a CS-24 before the start of the 2011 season (around the 4th of July). The added volume will be a bonus. Not saying that the Spitfire isn't loud enough...but we'd like a little more volume at times.
For decoys.... all depends. I have just as much luck when I put out 3 or 4 decoys as I do when I put out 24. I'd buy about 3 or 4 flocked decoys and start with that.
alright and i hunt in a woody semi open area is there any recommended set up? that you can think of? and i use a blind as well if that makes a difference
Calls...hmmm..lots of good ones. I have a couple Mallardtones (sound great), I bought two Gibson calls (sound great). I don't have a Faulks..but will.
Set up for your location.... I will tell you the MOST important part to crow hunting (and I'm sure others will have their opinions) and that is HIDING. You gotta hide, you can't move or it's game over. Crows are phenominal when it comes to eyesight.
Anyone can call a crow in. Especially if they are uneducated. Hiding from them is KEY and you also gotta know how to shoot.
I'd put 3 -4 dekes in an opening (at least 20 yds from the woods/brush) and try that. You can also run & gun (just jump in some thick cover and start calling...NO DECOYS). This is nice cause you don't have to mess around with set up.
I see you guys are still at it As for hand calls thalshot I wouldn't suggest doing like I did and buy a bunch of cheap ones. They all make a sound but that sound will make a turkey gobble and that is about it. I bought every plastic cheap call they make until I saw the Gibsons for sale at crowmart. Now I have a lanyard full of calls and only blow one the gibson. I look like an arkansaw duck guide when i'm in the field. As far as e-callers go, save your money up and buy a good one to start with. I bought 3 tape players before I got smart and bought the CS-24 foxpro. Now I have calls out the ass and only use one hand call and one e-caller. You keep hanging around this site and these guys will hook you like they did me If you are married, unless she shoots well and can be still in a crow hide git rid of her. Spend every spare dime you have on ammo and Deeks in the off season, And go ahead and stick the needle in your veins son cause YOU WILL BE HOOKED................ And another one bites the dust AAAHHH!!!!!
Ouch chippy, I hope for your sake your gal holds still and shoots decent, otherwise your one lonely cowboy.I like the ammo and decoy advice, you can never have to much of both.
In my limited experience i can tell you that the Mallardtone sounds great, but i spit into it so much it stopped working. If it weren't for bringing my Hammerin crow call I would have had to go home. No amount of spit stopped it from working so that was a plus.
Howver i still want to learn how to use the Mallardtone without slobbering it to death. I expect it will get better results.
and yes, i was able to bring crows to my setup first time out with the Hammerin. Didn't get to shoot any and I am no expert, but the Hammerin call can get the job done.

trust me i am already HOOKED just trying to get established on my own instead of bumming around with others and is the spitfire a decent call? thats the one i was thinking about getting
and i also just ordered some decoys and flocking and 2 moving decoys(flappers) because i heard that crows like flapping and pigeons like spinning is this true? or does it really not matter
I definitly like you going digital over the wired, but it's really going to depend how your are intending to call in crows. My FX-3 is louder than the spitfire and there is plenty of times when I know my sound can't reach where the birds are. Also (you can look it up), I don't think you can change sounds witout buying addition wirering and cards. Way all options and decide for yourself. At least you are walking in right ditrection.
oh i am DEFINETLY infected after two back rubs and a foot massage that i gave my girlfriend she even said she would come with something i never though id hear can you recommend a set up for this amount and type of decoys i hunt in a open field, and a wooded area can anyone recommend a good set up? i also hunt out of a blind if that makes a difference
you won't be sorry with the spitfire. I just picked one up after using the call you were asking about for 3 years. It finally quit working. I LOVE the cordless feature. makes setup a breeze now.
haha shane well she will be in all camo so dont worry i wont be able to see her =p and think of the pluses ! she has to remain TOTALLY silent! ....tell me is that not a dream come true? i think so
woah someones getting smart in the mouth eh? hahahah i was just wondering if its ok for it to be out in the open or if i should get it as clost to trees as possible
Hey 13, Shanedog hit the nail on the head.Setting up a blind and setting up on a spot is 90% common sense. Pick a location where crow frequent, pick a location where you can be well hidden from the crows, pick a location where you can hopefully see the crow approaching and have good shooting lanes once they get into gun range. Get all set up, load your gun, turn on the caller, stay still, be ready, and blast away! You will almost always have a blind spot, but if you pay attention and keep your head on a swivel you can nail those silent, sneaky "back door crows" that always seem to slip in from nowhere. If you need help on how to hit crows with a shotgun (gun mount, leads, followthru, ect...) I can address that at a later date. Best wishes and good gunning Big A.
I prefer my blinds in hedge rows near low trees, if I have to be on the edge of the field,I stay away from the high trees. I always, always, have the sun at my back and lots of shadows to blend into. I have morning blinds and afternoon blinds set up all over,so I can have the sun at my back.As for wind I would rather have it at my back, but it is never where you want it,sun at back is most important. Same when I hunt for coyotes, however wind direction is a big deal when huntin yotes, think parts per trillion for the nose of the yote.

yeah and i know the sun to the back thing i just didnt quite no how to set a blind because i normally hunt an open field and i mean a blind is a big thing right in the middle of a flat field enough to make any crow be like wtf??
If it is constructed right,so you can stay real low till it time to shoot then its okay, check out some of Bob A's set ups because he has portable blind, and he has pole with a coat or something to block out the sun...

Hey Hizz, Have you ever done the open field set-up where you dig a hole straight down aways, set decoys around the hole and jump in, then have a buddy bury you up to your armpits, hand you your gun and shells then throw a ratty old deer hide over you head. Your buddy has to chase down crips and sometimes dig you out but the crows can get real close sometimes. It's a hoot and the SEEDS!

Not sure I want my SEEDS planted.
