I'm between seasons......

Crow is over, coyote is shotgun only.

Trout is not in full swing yet. Rivers swollen from spring run-off and rains.

Snow forecast for tomorrow...Smelt storm. (smelts are starting to show up, althought I do not go after smelts)

Striped Bass have not arrived in the bay yet.

Too cold to paint anything outdoors. Wife gets mad if I paint indoors.

Have enough ammo loaded for WW III.

Rifle is in the smith-shop getting a bedding job.

BORED OF BEING BORED.......confusefuriousdoh  bleh.gifspin.gif

Hey, my wife wants me to paint the front entrance, if you want could you come over and do that for mebiggrin. Between the crows, coyotes and the upcoming turkey hunt (april 25th) my wife is going to forget what i look like. Have I rubbed it in enough yet, sorry, I just couldn't help myself.I know what you mean though. Until I started hunting crows it was a long wait from turkey to deer season and I very rarely drop a line in the water either.

Pat B,

I took up pool inorder to fill the 8 month gap between crow seasons. Charlie Pap from this bulletin board sent me some nice photos of him playing with some of the top players in the country. I'm giving it some serious thought into paying him a visit just to meet him and see what kind of game he has, I'm not afraid of getting beat, I look at it like a learning experience especially if I'm out classed. Thats the only way you get better is to play with players on you're level or better, if you play with bums thats how you're going to play.

Skip,
It's a twenty year old Savage .30-06. (model 10, or model 110, I believe)
Right now it shoots 1 - 1 1/2 " groups, when I do my thing right. If not, I can be looking at a 5" group. @ 100 yds.
Once I made a mistake and it printed a 3/4 " group.
Over time ..... I've had a trigger job - breaks nice at 2 1/2 lbs. No creep. Just tighten your finger on the trigger and BLAM.
The barrel is free-floated.
The crown is reworked and recessed.
Right now it carries a Vortex DiamondBack 3-9x-40mm scope. I like 3x for woods work, and 6x for open stuff.
Collected antelope, whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, moose, and black bear with it.
Trying to get a few coyotes with it. But now that I'm forced to go to shotgun for coyote until Oct, I thought maybe try a bedding job.

Pat

Pat B, whats with the "shotguns only" thing with coyotes at this time of the year. I can't see the rational behind that.

Here in southern Ontario you can't use anything bigger than ".275" calibre for small game (coyotes) because it's so overly populated (people), which is no big deal as you don't need something that big but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They are saying I can't use my marlin 30-30 but a .270 win mag. is go to go. Figure that out. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere. Hey Pat does your season end for coyotes, it's open year round here but i know of no one that hunts them in the summer for obvious fur bearing reasons.

Pat; stripers & herring just showing up in the Hudson River in NY. Just started coming up last week, so I'm afraid they're quite a distance from you. Jerry

Ted, IZ.......coyotes are year round, but you can only use rifles of greater than .23 cal from last weekend of Oct to first week of Dec (whitetail season). After the first week of Dec you can use any centrefire rifle until the end of Mar (which is also the close of crow season). After March 31 you have to use shotgun and this is the only firearm you can possess in wildlife habitat until the open of deer season again .

This was the first year I was trying coyotes, so I figured on using my deer gun from end Oct to end March. (really can't afford another rifle for 3 1/2 months of coyote). Besides the buck at my shoulder between the '06 and and .243 is about the same for me, maybe a bit more on the '06. The property that I have permission to hunt coyote is a sheep farm and they don't care how they die. So 150 gr .30 cal it is. And from what I hear no spinners, jumpers, or runners with that combo.

Jerry....thanks. Fishing gear is all tuned up ready to go. Ultra light for the trout, med heavy for stripers. Maybe another 4 weeks before they get here. Spent many a wonderful day at the beach wetting a line during the summer. Mind you I have caught stripers right up to Christmas after they get here. (Go fishing Sunday afternoons during hunting seasons as no Sunday hunting here) Besides the one or two I do keep taste good.

Pat
