Here is where the idea came from. I stopped by my Dads today and he had just killed a snake. I offered to throw it into the woods, but he said to put it in the road and in about 5 minutes it would be gone. So I did. Sure enough the sky lit up with crows , a fight started, more crows showed up, more fighting, more crows, me with out a gun, it was the dangedest thing.
So the thought is, has anyone ever seen this ? I know if there is any thing dead in the road you have crows but dang.
So the next thought is to go buy a big toy snake and use if for a decoy.
Hush Jon, I know what you are thinking.
I'll let you know how it works out. Season comes in tomorrow, gone have to go by Wally world for a new toy.
Neat idea and one the TCP will try out later this year. Bagged a couple of crows on a "2 shot" hunt a weekend back (combat efficiency rating of 100%) and took a hard charging raccoon on this Sunday around 2:30 in the afternoon with 90 degree plus Texas heat. Amazing what the FoxPro can call in almost any conditions.
The trick is going to be the set up. Would you have it set to where the crows were fighting with the snake ? Or would you have it set so that a few were either eating the snake or if they were fighting over the snake ? These are both good questions and probably get answered in time. But you just have to wonder which way to go.
Dust, I do like the thought with Ketchup that should add a bit to it. Plus as most crows around here eat at Mc'y D's they should be good on the smell.
I read you're post about crows being able to smell ketchup. Actually crows don't have a sence of smell, they rely almost soley on the visual. I suppose this is why they can eat some of the things they do when the feed gets tight.

Speaking of McD's, I saved a quarter pounder container, french fry box with fries, and the bag. Gonna' fashion a good ol' happy meal on a board when the fries harden up. Worth a try next season!
I have shot little red squirrels in my yard, when they start to think that my house is really theirs. Crows have picked up and flew off with the corpses within 20 mins... I have used two crow decoys and a McDonalds Bag and fluttering tinfoil to attract crows. Rabbit skin on the ground also works. Something visual as Bob pointed out. A grass snake in the grass may not work so good.
