Been interested in getting a lever action rifle (probably 30/30) Does anyone have a henry lever action rifle? Should I get a henry or a winchester? Also the Henry's also come in .45 caliber, does that shoot a .45acp round? And what is an effective range for a 30/30 and .45 cal? Was thinking I might try to pick up a Winchester model 94 someplace for cheap, not sure what I want to invest in. If this is too off topic just delete it, thanks
i have several friends who deer hunt out in Oregon with Marlin 30/30 levers. they love 'em. not sure where you live but they seem to be very popular for the steep mountains and brush of Oregon.
I live in upstate NY, im sure I can easily find a Marlin 336. Good deer gun I imagine. And since we had a wild hog walk through our yard and news of "wild pigs invading NY" im thinking it'd be a great pig gun too :)
I am with these guys,Marlin or Winchester. My dad has a few Marlin's a 30/30 that was made 75 years ago, bullet proof. He also has a 45/70 thats killed a bunch of bear. I also shot bear with a Marlin .44 mag carbine, great rifle,Dad also shot one with it.Then he sold it!! We also have a few Winchester lever actions and there are also great shooters. If I am going to hunt deer up here in the woods,a 30/30 lever action is hard to beat!!
I am not knocking the Henry rifles at all,I bought my Dad one in .22 mag for xmas and he loves it for his on going war with the local squirrels.
Given that there are so many 30/30's out there, you should be able to get a great piece for short money, and when your out in the bush hunting, every darn counrty store sells 30/30 ammo.

I think ive decided on a Marlin 336, I dont want to spend the money of a Henry for the simple fact ide be afraid to scratch it in the woods. The winchester 94's I guess have a lot of problems if they're made after 1964 and I dont think I could tolerate a top ejecting gun forcing me to buy an offset scope mount if I ever wanted to scope it. Im just sick of buying guns that have chinsey crap wood for the stocks, what ever happened to the guns that my dad has thats real wood?
Dano, your right,on the top ejection, sounds like the the .336 will be a winner for you!!Marlins are awesome.I think you will have a great rifle that will fill all your needs.Check out the Hornady lever action ammo, stuff preforms hands down better than most stuff out there, good luck!!

Well i've continued my search for a Marlin 336 to no avail, since Remington bought marlin in 2010 they're guns have turned to garbage and I cant seem to find one before that date, guess i'll have to look for a used one someplace. Why is it that you cant buy a decent gun anymore for under $700? Stupid corporate america :) Please let me know if anyone knows where I can get a real Marlin gun, not a Remlin :)
dano; go with the Marlin, my son has one in 35 cal & its a great gun.. He found his used in a gunshop for around $300, like it better than the Winchesters. where are you in upstate ? I'm from just outdside Albany, try the gunshows. Jerry
