I have been crow hunting for a few years now. Started out with a theoben eliminator (beeman crow magnum) which was good sport however i now use a Benelli Montefeltro 12g. Northern Ireland is a small country so I dont have access to much land unlike you guys in in the US. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and I think the website is fantastic. Information is first class and i find it very usefull. Crows have got to an epidemic level here in Ulster and I cant wait to make a dent in the population. I have also just took delivery of a cz455 American in .22 and am planning to use it on Tuesday with a couple of magpie decoys. Atb Spud76

Welcome Spud,

I used to drink a drink called "a Belfast Bomber" up in Kansas City when I went up there on business. They served them in a very nice Irish Pub and most mortals couldn't drink more than two of them without passing out cold! I mean they were pretty potent.

So, whats the most crows you see at any one time around Ulster?

Keep us all posted Spud.

Bob A.

Hi Spud76,

Welcome to CrowBusters from the Texas Crow Patrol...

We look forward to your postings and photo's.  My wife travelled to your beautiful country this summer with her church group. She loved seeing the sights, learning your history and meeting your people.

Your magpie plan for Tuesday sounds like a real winner!  Matching wits with the black bandits can't be beat for fun.

Regards,

Welcome Spud! Half of my family came over here from Ireland.

Your avatar is great by the way. It makes me very thirsty! I would love to visit your country and sit over 2 or 12 pints with you. :)

Hey Spud,

Welcome. I look forward to hearing about your crow outings.

My brother in law grew up in Belfast; he was a professional boxer there, and his dad is a retired steeple-chaser who still lives there.

One of my best friends lives just outside of Cork.

There are a lot of Cawleys in Northern Ireland still. That's on my father's side; my mom is a MacAlister from the Kintyre Peninsula.

I've been to Kintyre, but I'd love to visit Ireland some day.

Rather assuming of me to consider you as a British subject Spud. Here in Canada we recognise Northern Ireland as part of the UK or the former Great Britan and not the Republic of Ireland.

 Spud,

Are you allowed to use electronic calls there?  My success really jumped when I bought my FoxPro Spitfire.

Electronic calls are illegal in Northern Ireland, unless you are calling crows in to photograph them. I was actually browsing through the crow buster store and thinking of ordering a new mouth call and instructional cd. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi Spud, First of all welcome to crow busters. Thank you for your kind response about polical and religous issues.. Too many folks on this site drift into useless dicussions about politics and other "off topic" crap.  Best of luck with "crow busting."  Pictures are very welome!!

Hello frorn the south east USA.  My favorite christian artist is from northern Ireland, Robin Mark.  He put out an album a few years ago called revival in belfast.  Great album!  I saw him live a few years ago in Knoxville Tennseess and got to meet him, really nice guy.  You have pheasants in Ireland dont you?  Ever hunt them?  Anyway good to have you here.

Hi Spud, I'm new here myself. Seems like a good practical bunch. I'm trying to train my redtailed hawk to take crows. Working out the legal issues still as they are mostly in parks in small towns here.
I like your picture too. I would have to drive 160 mi. to get a properly poured Guiness.

Good luck and welcome.

That is a tall order for a redtail.  I have a falconer license and have whacked some crows with hawks.  Goshawk is the best, then Harris hawk, then falcon of any sort.  Lots of fun let me know if you get one.

Redditch: Now you have gone and mentioned an amazing bird.. the woodpigeon. I had the chance to shoot "woodies" back in 2006 and will never forget the experience. A mixture of woodies going to feed and to roost with crows and jackdaws inbetween... well, it just does not get better than that!

What is your experience with woodpigeons, if I can ask?

Hi Skip, I used to shoot lots of woodies, but since moving here to Northern Ireland, most pigeons I shoot are feral (And dumb as a block of wood), but I doo manage the occassional woodies, and sometimes will get 5-6 of them amongst the crows (Carrion, Grey, Hooded, and Jackdaws), and ferals. I even breasted four the other night, and served them the family in a red wine sauce, fryed (30 seconds a side) with onions and garlic), served with roast potatoes, mixed vegatables, and of course, the red wine sauce

Before leaving to travel the world (Back in the 70's), I used to shoot 500 to a 1,000 on a good day, and in those days we didn't have nice things like the Kick Off recoil system you get with the Beretta's nowadays, so black and blue shoulders were the order of the day !!
Here, as stated, it's mostly different corvids, crows, ravens, magpies, jays etc., and not much pigeon, although come harvest they will suddenly appear from nowhere again LOL. Southern ireland and the Eastern part of Northern Ireland tend to have more pigeons.

Hi Redditch. Haven't posted here in a while. We haven't had any good bags for ages. Looking forward for the arrival of the young crows to beef the bags up a bit. The crows around here are smart to my friends and I. New tactics required.

Hi Spud, I was out this morning and set up by 04:30, but bags were small, and a mixture of feral, woody, grey, jackdaw, and carrion. Rain finally stopped play at 11:30 I'll be out again tomorrow, but the crows now seem to have switched to grubs and insects to feed their young, so they don't stay on any one field at the moment. Never mind, we still get a few, and the pigeons help fill the bag too, so even if the bags aren't big, at least I get a nice day out. A few weeks back we were getting bags of 70 plus on a day, and now it's often below 20 Still, soon harvest will be with us, and then it will be back to business

Hey Spud, welcome to the forums! Gotta say this is the best forum to learn about killing some crows. Also a good bunch for talking just about anything hunting/fishing related. Always enjoy having more people from other countries to teach us a little about how and what they hunt. Post some pics and let us know what you like to hunt.
