Hey All

Well this years crow season has been terrible, the tornado, hurricane and flood just about did in most of the summers vegi crops. Then drought killed a ton of the corn, and now we have had so much rain the farmers have cow corn in the fields that they can not combined.

So I decided to get on to the coyotes hot and heavy, since October 15th I have killed elevan dogs, and had two crawl offs. I also had to take two weeks off for a bout with walking pneumonia. So now its deer season,we can not call coyotes, but we can hunt them with shotguns and orange, not my style,so I took the two weeks of to hone my rat shooting set up. Here is a couple of Monster yotes I got in one night, one at 47 lbs,and one at 57 lbs.

SAM_0196.jpg

My night vision rat shootin rig!!biggrin

Its a PVS-14 mounted to the back of the scope on my Benjiman Marauder with a infrared iluminator that make the rats eyes glow like stars, but they cant see it so its like cheating!! I bet I have killed close to a hundred in this few weeks with this set up,silent death !!

Thanks,Jon!!  There are some big dogs up here!!And a lot of them!!

Here is what night rat sniping is like with night vision!!  See how the eyes shine,I turn my scope out to 4 power and spot when I see one i turn up the scope magnification to 16,I have the focus set for the 16 powersetting,it does get darker the more you turn up the scope, but the infrared helps you see.

Impressive pair of coyotes - they grow 'em big in the Commonwealth! Congratulations.

I can't comment on your air rifle - that's way over my head but it must be extremely effective.

Great job on the coyotes and man that rat shooting looks fun.....might have to get the gamo and find a farmer that needs a little help.

The farmers will love you if you zap their rats, every farm has them!!! Next thing they are inviting you back for crows, and other pests, then deer, turkeys, geese, etc.!!

To get yourself going you can use a small light,or a light with a red filter, the guy that got me into it uses a light still. I have the night vision for my yote hunting and figured I would see how it worked.

All you need is a decent air gun, with a decent flashlight mounted to it with a pressure switch. Look to the grain bins, and the calf barns, most farmers can tell you where they see the most rats, its great fun,and practice, you can not have flinch problem and use an air gun it will keep you honest.  And its something your kids will like to do,you can take turns shooting!!

Get this I shot a bunch in a farmers calf barn last saturday night,he is giving me the inside scoop as to when he is going to cut his last cornfield,so me and my dad can get in there for some geese!!

I got another monster male yote tonite!! I will weigh him up and post a picture tommorow!!

I just happen to have a MIL and my dad with barns full of hay. You say a flash light.....like a small mag light or a bright rechargable light?

How much for the PVS-14? Any reason it's not in front of the scope?

I think the mag lite would be good, but it really helps to have a pressure switch so you can turn lite on and off fast. But I think a predator lite with red filter will work.

Dust

Used, this unit cost $2800.00 gen 3 on a dark night no moon it looks like daytime! I dont know why its mounted on the back, the PVS-22 mounts in front. I think Kevin at HTRN experimented and found this worked be for night yote hunting.

Check out the site I got it from.

Here is the monster dog I got yesterday, called with nothing but coyote vocals.

Shane, used to hunt rats at a dump when I was a kid, liked it better than any hunting i've done. No dumps left to shoot in & I never thought about farms & barns. Already have the pellet rifles, thx for the Idea. If it works out I'll start a rat hunting forum.

How did you justify that kinda money? You must be single. I guess the 22 is the one that I saw mounted on the front of a talon.

Shane, Don't have a setup yet, I have a gamo pro hunter & an older beeman that I'm fond of, nothin fancy but the beeman shoots real well. Thought I had a barn to hunt but i guess rats are few & far between there, not really a working farm, just a few horses so just some hay & some horse feed thats kept in metal containers, so I guess I have to find a spot. Want to have a place to hunt them before I sink money into equipment. You're by Pittsfield right ? The place I thought I had lined up is in Nassau. Guess I need to start knocking on farmers doors. I'll let u know how I make out. Jerry

Hi Shad

Those air rifles will be perfect!!!  I am in mid state east of Springfield,my best rat spots are dairy farms.  Actually for rat shootin the lighter and shorter the air gun the better,my Marauder is a tad much, but its the boss when the shots get long!!

Hey Black Duck Nick, sorry to do this to you but here is another monster yote I got tonite,at my rat farm!!  Called him in three times!! finally took the shot!!  This makes number 13 !!  Weighed in at 49 lbs.

RWS 850 for birds at grandma's.  Savage Mk2 in .22LR or .17hm2 if that isn't enough, and a 7.62x39 upper I hope to bloddy on a new years day hunt.  If I get it bloodied it might be off down the road to be replaced by a 6.5G upper now that ASC and WOlf are in full production.

Hey Shane,

We thought you were captured by a renegade pack of hugh coyotes using night ops against you.  Apparently you were more than prepared for the scenario!

Well played on the night vision.  I will be studying those options at Shot Show 2012 next month.  The first order of business will be to adopt sound suppression a la Texas Matt.

Regards,

Wow that looks like fun. I dont think its legal to hunt yotes with night vision in missouri though and cant really justify that much money for rats only.
